Complex Engineering Problem

The document provides guidelines for a complex engineering problem assignment on manufacturing processes. Students are asked to submit a report that includes: 1) A process plan outlining the machining operations, sequence, time for each operation, tools used, and need for re-fixturing to manufacture a rod support component within given tolerances. 2) The appropriate G and M codes for CNC machines. 3) Detailed calculations of the time required for each machining operation using reference materials. 4) CAD drawings after each machining operation. The assignment will be assessed based on the quality of the process plan, time calculations, total cycle time calculation, and CAD drawings, with marks distributed accordingly.

Manufacturing Processes II (ME-3823)

Complex Engineering Problem (CLO2—C3—PLO11) [30 Marks]

You are a mechanical engineer working in a manufacturing industry. Industry received an order to
manufacture a component, called rod support. Drawing of rod support is shown below. The
tolerance requirement for two 0.5-inch radii is ±1/64in. For all other dimensions the tolerance
requirement is ±0.005in. The work material is aluminum. Calculate the overall cycle time to
manufacture this part?
Your report should include the following:
a) Process plan; containing information of machining operations, sequence in which these
operations are carried out, time taken by each operation, specifications of cutting tools used
in each operation, re-fixturing (if needed).
b) G and M codes for each operation, in case CNC machines are used.
c) Detailed calculations of time required to perform each machining operation.
d) CAD drawing, after each machining operation.

Guidelines:
• Assume any suitable dimensions for rectangular starting stock material.
• For reference and relevant data, use “Simplified Time Estimation Booklet for Basic
Machining Operations” by K. C Polgar, ISO standards for tool material selection and
Machining Handbooks for selection of optimum cutting conditions.
Assessment Criteria and its linkage with CEP Traits:
Marks Assessment Criteria Comments Marks
Distribution Obtained
Process Plan:
• Machining operations selected in proper
sequence (WK4, WP3, EP2)
3 • Appropriate machine tool used for each
operation (WK3)
• Tool selection according to ISO
standard/Machining Handbook (WK4, WP5)
Machining Time Calculation:
• Time estimates for setting each
machine/cutting tool/workpiece before and
after machining (WK4, EP2)
20 • Selection of standard cutting conditions
according to Machining Handbook (WP3,
WP5)
• Machining processes selection according to
tolerance requirements (WK4, EP2)
• Detailed machining time calculation for each
operation (WK4, WP3)
2 Total cycle time calculation
5 CAD drawings illustrating each machining step
Total = 30

For Reference:
CLO2 Taxonomy PLO11
Level
Demonstrate application of C3 Project Management: An ability to demonstrate
advanced manufacturing management skills and apply engineering principles to
concepts and techniques in one's own work, as a member and/or leader in a team,
machining mechanical parts to manage projects in multidisciplinary environment.

CEP Traits Assessed:

WP1: Depth of knowledge Engineering problems that cannot be resolved without in-depth
required engineering knowledge
WK3: Engineering Fundamentals
WK4: Engineering Specialization
WP3: Depth of analysis required Have no obvious solution and require abstract thinking, originality
in analysis to formulate suitable models.
WP5: Extent of applicable codes Are outside problems encompassed by standards and codes of
practice for professional engineering.
EP2: Judgement (Professional Require judgement in decision making.
