Lecture 6 Derivations

This document discusses the derivation of maximum flow conditions for two traffic flow models: 1) The Greenshields model defines maximum flow occurring when speed is equal to the square root of 2, and density is equal to 1/2. 2) The Greenberg model defines maximum flow occurring when density is equal to e, and the corresponding speed is c/e. The document shows the mathematical derivations of taking the derivatives of flow with respect to speed and density in each model and setting them equal to zero to determine the conditions for maximum flow.

Maximum Flow Derivations
Greenshields Model

First, we want to take the first derivative with respect to speed.  We need flow only as a
function of speed, so we replace density in the equation:

Now we differentiate with respect to  :

2               2   2
d

Finally we set the derivative equal to zero and solve for  :

0   2             2             2

So at maximum flow,

Now we follow the same process for flow as a function of density.  We need flow only as a
function of density, so we replace speed in the equation:

           q   k
k

Now we differentiate with respect to k:
dq
  2
dk

Finally we set the derivative equal to zero and solve for k:

0   2            2            2k            k

So at maximum flow, k

First, we need flow as a function of density, so we multiply both sides of the equation by k.
k k ln   ln            q k ln   ln

Now we differentiate with respect to k:
dq 1 dq
ln   ln 1               ln  1 ln
dk dk
dq dq
  ln ln 1               ln 1
dk dk

Finally we set the derivative equal to solve for k:

0   ln 1            0   ln 1            1 ln

1 ln ln            ln ln 1

So at maximum flow,

We can also plug into the model equation to solve for speed at maximum flow:

k
c ln             c  1
k
So at maximum flow,
