c. Wildlife may try to eat plastics and choke on them.
d. Trash and litter won’t bring them any harm.
Looking Back
The Philippines has been truly blessed. It has extensive coastlines where
the richest most biodiverse marine environments thrive, creating virtual factories of
fish and aquatic resources. It has arable lands, diverse flora and fauna and rich
mineral deposits. We know that nature provides us all our basic needs essential for
our daily existence, but we tend to over exploit it. Humans have brought about many
changes and deep impact into our physical natural environment.
Let us try to identify some various ways how humans have caused drastic change into
the natural environment.

Brief Introduction
As times have changed, so has our planet. Global warming has become a
critical issue in today 's society, and it will not go away unless we do something about
it. There are people all around the globe who have made the change and decided to
be conscious of the health of our world. Unfortunately however, it is not enough. As
long as the majority of society continues to rely on fossil fuels, continues to waste
energy, and continues destroying forests, our planet will continue to suffer. If we are
to change the fate of our beautiful planet, society as a whole must take immediate
action. To make the world a better place, we all should become environmental
advocates, and take a stand to save humanity. We must make environmentally
conscious changes in our own lives, teach those around us, and lead by example to
make a difference. Above all else, every single person on the planet must change the
way they live day to day. We must be aware of every potential harmful effect of every
activity we engage in. Every gallon of gas saved, light turned off, and computer
unplugged will impact the future of the Earth. We should each take the initiative to
teach others about the importance of being environmentally conscious, influence one
another to achieve for our environments greater good, for a greater glory.
Activities
ACTIVITY #1: Save the World!
I. Objective:
To encourage students to become environmental heroes.
II. Materials:
● Students’ notebook
● Pieces of cardboard
● Projector/Internet
III. Procedures:
1. Ask students who their superheroes are. Why do they like them? What makes
someone a superhero?
2. Write on the board the different names, as suggested by the students, as well
as the characteristics. Ask them to think about real life superheroes—can they
name any?
3. Explain to them that by the end of the lesson they will create their own
superhero, someone that they can be like!
ACTIVITY #1.1
• Students will watch a video- Save the World:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn8R_XqjjI0
• Students will get into small groups of 3-5 and create a short play. They must act out an
environmental problem (e.g. trash in the rivers, pollution), how it affects the
environment/animals, and give practical ways to change this. e.g. recycle, use less
plastic, organize river clean ups.
• The students will then act out their plays in front of the class.
ACTIVITY #1.2
• Students will invent an “environmental superhero”: on a piece of cardboard they
will draw a picture of their superhero and write what he/she specifically does to
help the environment.
• (These could be placed around the classroom or house as a reminder to the
students on what kind of people we need to save our world).
• Students will make a list of all the characteristics of a “environmental
superhero” in their notebook, and then write a promise and sign it as oath to
themselves to do their best to be a superhero whenever they can.
ACTIVITY #2: We Must Recycle!
I. Objective:
Students will learn how items can be reused instead of being simply discarded.
II. Materials:
card stock
crayons, colored pencils, paint (optional)
clean, plastic bottles
scissors
assorted art supplies
III. Procedure:
1. Ask students if they have ever recycled anything. For some this will be a daily or
weekly thing, but for others this maybe a foreign concept. Explain that recycling
has two meanings, for most it means taking things that others may throw in the
trash to go to a dump and cleaning and sorting them ( glass, plastic, paper) and
letting the recycling center use this stuff to make something else. The other
meaning is about the same, but it means using something, like a pop bottle, to
create something else, usually something useful. This is sometimes called
upcycling.
2. Explain that the need to recycle is not just so plastic bottles do not end up rolling
around in the landfill.
3. There are many types of recyclables that end up in landfills, but never biodegrade.
Though they should be safely contained in the landfill, some trash, including
recyclables, can end up out in nature. This can harm wildlife and plants that are
trying to survive in the wild.
4. So, today, we are going to try to use ‘trash’ that could be harmful to create
something unique, functional and beautiful.
5. This is one way to recycle or upcycle. Let’s see what we can create.
Plastic has become one of the environment’s biggest adversaries. We have a growing
awareness of how it is choking our streets and rivers, smothering and strangling marine
life, even ending up in our food. It is more ubiquitous than ever.
Directions: Ditch your old ways of utilizing plastics and write down what are you going to Switch
into to help cut down plastic pollution.

Application:
A. Commit to making positive earth-friendly acts and helps foster a more healthy
and more sustainable world. YOU can make a difference – no matter how small your acts
are... but when WE come together, the impact will be BIG! Identify the following pictures
and indicate what they symbolize.

B. Make a pledge of commitment on how you can help conserve and preserve the
environment. Affix your signature below the commitment.

We throw all our waste right into a bin without a second thought. Most of the time,
the things that we throw out can be recycled! This activity will help you be more aware
of your actions and realize how much waste goes to waste on a daily basis!
Directions:
Place the different types of waste into the corresponding bins. (you can put the
same one in more than one bin) Answer this activity by going into this link below:

Remember
➢ Environmental conservation is the sustainable use of our natural resources
through careful management, through: reducing your waste, saving trees, recycling,
using renewable resources so as to minimize loss, wastage and damage.
➢ Reducing is about minimizing the amount of waste we produce in our everyday
activities. We can exercise reducing our waste by:
• Purchasing and using less items. For example, bringing our own carrier bags
when we go shopping can help to reduce the number of plastic bags used!
• Passing on leftovers to someone who needs it instead of throwing it away!
#sharingiscaring
➢ Reusing is about looking for ways to use materials again. Glass containers, plastic
bottles, and cloth bags are all reusable materials.
➢ Recycling is about converting waste into materials that can be reused. Examples of
recyclable materials include newspapers and metal cans.
➢ The 3R’s- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is good for the environment. It reduces the
amount of trash and garbage that needs to be disposed of in places like landfills.
Products from recycled materials usually use less energy. This is excellent for
creativity and means a keepsake.
➢ Sustainability is defined as responsible interaction with the environment to avoid
depletion or degradation of natural resources
➢ By using the environment sustainably, the environment and the natural resources
it provides will not be depleted or destroyed permanently - and will be available for
human use for a very long time.
➢ Let us participate in promoting environmental conservation and preservation
to create a brighter future not only for our planet but for our children and the next
generations to come!
