Introduction
A curriculum outlines all the subjects that children will study in school. It outlines what they
will be taught and how their learning in each subject will be assessed. It ensures that students are
provided with learning opportunities that identify and celebrate their uniqueness so that they can
develop their full potential. Students need to be regularly assessed and feedback provided to
them and their parents. Students’ learning should be regularly assessed using different types of
assessments.
A primary classroom curriculum is all the organized instructional activities and opportunities for
education for the students at the grade level. These activities and opportunities have been
specifically planned so that the students in the classroom can access education in a consistent and
efficient manner. It consists of all the topics that will be discussed in class, the order in which
they will be discussed, as well as the strategies employed, and the resources and materials that
will be utilized during the prescribed lessons. “A primary curriculum is a framework that

How Assessment is Used to Guide Curricular Decisions
“Assessment of student academic achievement is the process of evaluating whether students are
learning what we say they are learning. More specifically, assessment is the systematic
collection, review, and use of information to increase students' learning and development.
Through a variety of measures, students are assessed to determine whether or not they are
achieving the learning outcomes that faculty have determined for their courses and programs.”

in classes, at the end of each unit and for homework. Rubrics are shared in advance to help
students understand how they will be assessed. Students also engage in peer assessment for

Conclusion
In conclusion, a curriculum drives every classroom, and in order for students to be successful
teachers have to continually assess their learning to identify whether learning is taking place or
not. “Assessment is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of
education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement,
instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding.” (Edutopia, 2008). Assessments
should be ongoing and students should be assessed using a variety of strategies and activities so
