EDUC5440 Week 4 Written Assignment Unit 4

This document discusses assessment and curriculum in primary education. It defines a primary classroom curriculum as the organized instructional activities and opportunities for students at that grade level. Assessment is used in multiple ways to guide curricular decisions, such as identifying learning barriers and determining when reforms are needed. Students are regularly assessed through standardized exams, unit assessments, homework, peer assessments, and self-grading software to evaluate their learning and determine if curriculum adjustments are warranted. Assessment provides qualitative data to improve courses by informing changes to curriculum, teaching methods, materials, and other areas.

EDUC 5440 - Assessment and Evaluation

Dr. Grant Gerald

Sept 24, 2022

1
Introduction

A curriculum outlines all the subjects that children will study in school. It outlines what they

will be taught and how their learning in each subject will be assessed. It ensures that students are

provided with learning opportunities that identify and celebrate their uniqueness so that they can

develop their full potential. Students need to be regularly assessed and feedback provided to

them and their parents. Students’ learning should be regularly assessed using different types of

assessments.

What is a Primary Classroom Curriculum?

A primary classroom curriculum is all the organized instructional activities and opportunities for

education for the students at the grade level. These activities and opportunities have been

specifically planned so that the students in the classroom can access education in a consistent and

efficient manner. It consists of all the topics that will be discussed in class, the order in which

they will be discussed, as well as the strategies employed, and the resources and materials that

will be utilized during the prescribed lessons. “A primary curriculum is a framework that

structures what a school sets out to teach its pupils. In this way, it covers the skills, knowledge,

attitude, and values, laying out the theory, product and practice. Therefore, we often refer to it as

a set of learning goals. In this respect, a primary curriculum features lesson materials, teaching

resources, and methods of evaluation.” (Dimensions, 2022).

How Assessment is Used to Guide Curricular Decisions

“Assessment of student academic achievement is the process of evaluating whether students are

learning what we say they are learning. More specifically, assessment is the systematic

collection, review, and use of information to increase students' learning and development.

Through a variety of measures, students are assessed to determine whether or not they are

achieving the learning outcomes that faculty have determined for their courses and programs.”

(Washtenaw Community College, n.d.):

Assessment is utilized in different ways to guide decisions that are made regarding the

curriculum at my school. Assessments are used as a means of supporting students’ learning. It

assists us in identifying any learning barriers so that we can use the right strategies and resources

to cater to students' needs as well as to identify when the curriculum needs to be reformed. My

school provides primary education to our students. They receive instructions in English

Language, Math, Social Studies, Science, Religious Education, Spanish, Art, Physical Education,

Music, and the Performing Arts. As a green school, they engage in experiential learning where

they participate in environmental initiatives such as oceanic research, sustainable farming, and

the implementation of sustainable waste management. As such, students engage in problem-

solving, investigating, experimenting, and asking questions.

They are assessed in three National Standardized Examinations: In Grade 3, they are assessed in

Math and English (GLAT 3). In Grade 6, they are assessed in English Language, Math, Social

Studies, and Science (GLAT 6). In addition, students are assessed for their overall participation

in classes, at the end of each unit and for homework. Rubrics are shared in advance to help

students understand how they will be assessed. Students also engage in peer assessment for

multiple choice and self-grading software such as IXL and quizzes.

3
Assessment is important for many reasons as outlined by Washtenaw Community College (n.d.):

● The results provide qualitative information that helps teachers identify how they might

improve courses and/or programs through changes in curriculum, teaching

methodologies, course materials, or other areas. Assessment results can provide a

powerful rationale for securing support for curricular and other changes when they are

integrated into the planning cycle for curriculum development and review,

● It may provide comparative data that can provide valuable information on how well

students are meeting the learning outcomes for a course or program, or may compare

students' performance with other institutions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a curriculum drives every classroom, and in order for students to be successful

teachers have to continually assess their learning to identify whether learning is taking place or

not. “Assessment is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of

education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement,

instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding.” (Edutopia, 2008). Assessments

should be ongoing and students should be assessed using a variety of strategies and activities so

that they can achieve regardless of their differences.
