1. Write the following sets as an interval or union of intervals. In each case x ∈ R.

(a) A = {x ∈ R|x 6= 5 ∧ x 6= 8}. (b) B = {x ∈ R|x2 (x3 − 1) 6= 0}.

2. Simplify each of the following sets and give the final result as an interval or union of intervals

(a) ([−3, 2] ∩ (0, 5))0 . ¯ ∪ (0.3̄, 11).

weight of all boxes is 1175 kg, how many of each type are there?

6. The cost of producing pens with the company logo printed on them consists of a onetime setup
fee of Birr 1000 plus Birr 20 for each pen produced. Determine the number of pens produced with
a cost of Birr 5,000 pens.

7. Solve each of the following equations.

(a) 5(3 − x) − 2(5 − 2x) = 3 (c) 2x+1

more goals than Sam, but together they scored less than 9 goals. How many goals did each score?

11. Let A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {4, 5, 6}. Determine if each of the following is a relation from A to B.

(a) R1 = {(1, 4); (2, 5); (6, 3)} (c) R3 = {(6, 3), (5, 2); (4, 1)}
(b) R2 = {(2, 5); (3, 6)} (d) R4 = {(1, 5); (1, 6); (2, 4); (2, 6), (3, 4), (3, 5)}

12. Let A = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and B = {1, 5, 8, 9, 24, 25}, List the elements of each of the following
relations from A into B.

(a) R1 = {(x, y) : x is a factor of y}.


(b) R2 = {(x, y) : x is a square of y}.
(c) R3 = {(x, y) : x is 6 less than y}.
(d) Find the domain and range of the relations R1 , R2 and R3 .

13. Determine whether the following relations are functions or not.

(a) R1 = {(−3, 27), (−2, 8), (−1, 1), (0, 0), (1, 1), (2, 8), (3, 27)}
(b) R3 = {(−3, −6), (−2, −4), (−1, −2), (0, 0), (1, 2), (2, 4), (3, 6)}
(c) R5 = {(1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 1), (4, 3)}.
(d) R7 = {(x, y)|x, y ∈ R ∧ x − y = 4}.
(e) R9 = {(x, y) : x is a first year student in AAU and y is the age of x}.

14. Let A = {a, b, c, d}, B = {a, c, d, e}. Let f : A −→ R and g : B −→ R be functions given by
f = {(a, 1), (b, 2), (c, 2), (d, 4)} and g = {(a, 0), (c, 4), (d, 8), (e, 0)}. Determine the domain and
find each of the following:
(a) f + g (b) 2f − 3g (c) f.g (d) f /g.

15. Identify each one of the following functions as one-to-one,onto and 1-1 correspondence.

(a) f : R −→ R+ given by f (x) = x2 .



(b) f : [2, ∞) −→ R defined by f (x) = x − 2.

16. Determine the domain and the inverse of each of the following functions.

17. Find the quotient and remainder when the polynomial p(x) is divided by the polynomial d(x).

(a) p(x) = 6x3 − 16x2 + 17x − 6; d(x) = 3x − 2.


(b) p(x) = x4 + 3x2 + 1; d(x) = x2 − 2x + 3.

18. Find the remainder when p(x) is divided by d(x) and determine if d(x) is a factor of p(x) for each
of the following..

(a) p(x) = x5 − 2x2 − 3, d(x) = x + 1.


(b) p(x) = x3 + 8, d(x) = x + 2

19. Find all the zeros of each of the following polynomial functions.

(a) x3 − 4x2 − 7x + 10 (b) x3 − 8x − 3 (c) x5 − 13x3 + 13x

20. For each of the following find g ◦ f and f ◦ g.
