Activities Q2Wk13

This document contains a worksheet for a Grade 10 Science class. It includes three enrichment activities about electromagnetic waves: 1) Identifying different types of EM waves and their applications in technology, such as radio waves being used for radio/TV communication and microwaves being used for cooking. 2) A table listing scientists like Maxwell, Ampere, Faraday, and Oersted who contributed to the theory of electromagnetic waves through discoveries about the relationship between electricity and magnetism. 3) A comparison of the energy, wavelengths, and frequencies of different EM waves, followed by questions about which has the highest/lowest frequency and energy. The questions establish that gamma rays have the highest frequency and energy, while radio waves

Enrichment Activity 2

DIRECTIONS: Write down the name and the significant contribution of the
scientists in the formulation of EM Wave theory. Write your answer
in the table below.

Name of Contribution
Scientist
James Clark He came up with a theory to account for electromagnetic waves. He
Maxwell  discovered that electromagnetic waves can be created when coupled
electrical and magnetic fields. He found that an altered magnetic field will
result in an altered electric field, and vice versa.
Andre Ampere Ampère's law, which he developed, is an electromagnetic law that
describes the magnetic force between two electric currents. He created a
device to measure the movement of electricity, which was eventually
improved into the galvanometer.
Michael Faraday Using a tiny magnet and a current-carrying wire, he repeated Oersted's
experiment and confirmed that the force the current produced on the
magnet was circular. He also succeeded in creating an electrical current
from a shifting magnetic field, or electromagnetic induction.
Hans Christian The discovery that a magnetic needle aligns itself perpendicular to a
Oersted current-carrying wire was found by Oersted, providing conclusive
experimental proof of the interaction between electricity and magnetism.
Heinrich Hertz He provided evidence that the electromagnetic waves James Clerk
Maxwell prophesied do indeed exist. A cycle per second is equal to one
hertz, and Hertz is the person whose name has been given honor by his
contemporaries to the unit of frequency.

Guide Questions:

Q1. Which among the EM waves has the highest frequency? Gamma rays

Q2. Which among the EM waves has the lowest frequency?

Radio waves

Q3. The energy of an EM wave also depends on its frequency, which means waves
with higher frequency has higher energy too. Which among the EM waves has the
highest energy?
Gamma rays

Q4. Which among the EM waves has the lowest energy?

Radio waves

Q5. What happens to the frequency of the electromagnetic waves as it progresses?

Does the frequency of the EM waves increase or decrease as we go from radio

wave to gamma ray?

The frequency increases as it progress. The frequency increases as we go from
radio waves to gamma ray.
