MID-SEM Exam Answer Key Max. Marks:25

Questions:
1. A helicopter flies from (P) to (J) as following
a. 5.0 km along eastwards up to Q
b. 3.0 km along northwards up to R
c. 4.0 km along N-W direction up to S
d. 4.0 km along southwards up to J
Calculate the bearing of PJ and distance between them. The starting point P has Coordinates
N-1000 m and E-200 m.

Answer:
Segment Northing [1] Easting [1]
PQ 0 5000 m
QR 3000 m 0
RS 2828.43 m -2828.43 m
SJ - 4000 m 0
L = +1828.43 m; D = +2171.57 m
Bearing of PJ = N 49° 52 ' 11.52" E; [0.5]
Distance = 2838.82 m [0.5]

2. In a closed survey ACDBA, due to obstructions between A and B, the length and direction
of line AB was not possible to measure. Following are the observations of other lines. Find
the length of line and direction of line BA. It was also required to fix a station E on line BA
such that DE will be perpendicular to BA. If there is no obstruction between B and E,
calculate the all data (length and angles) required for fixing the station as required.

AC 45 N 50° E
CD 66 S 70° E
DB 60 S 30° E

3.When angular measurements are more precise than the linear measurements Transit rule is
preferred for balancing the traverse. [1]

4. Whether local attraction (LA) affects included angle or not? No. [0.5]
It should be accompanied either by a sketch to illustrate it or by the following statement “At a
particular station both bearings are equally affected by LA and hence included angle will be
not affected” [0.5]
5. The lengths, bearings and included angles of a closed anti-clockwise traverse ABCDA, as
observed with a transit theodolite, are given below. Prepare a Gale Traverse Table and
calculate consecutive coordinates, independent coordinates of the stations including the
corrected lengths and bearings of traverse lines.
