Lesson 1

What Is Their Main Difference?


In English, words have Latin or Greek origins. So, all words have Latin or Greek roots.
However, 'base words' are individual words in the English language and are
meaningful without having any 'prefixes' or 'suffixes' added to them. Note that 'root'
words cannot be used on their own because they are incomplete.
The word that you attach to de base word is known as affix.

Directions: combine the prefix or suffix to de base word to create a new word. Then,
use your dictionary to investigate the meaning of the new word. Then draw a picture
to illustrate the meaning of the new word.

Specific Objective
Identify the parts of the prefixes to use in different activities.
Prefixes

A prefix is a letter or group of letters which is added to the


beginning of a word to change its meaning. Prefixes can, for
example, create a new word opposite in meaning to the word the
prefix is attached to. They can also make a word negative or express
relations of time, place or manner. Here are some examples

 I’m sorry I was unable to attend the meeting.


 Non-payment of fees could result in a student being asked to
leave the course.
 Has anyone ever really met an extraterrestrial being? (meaning
a being from another planet)
 The meat was overcooked and quite tasteless.

Specific objective

 Identify some suffixes and recognize them into different texts.


A suffix is a letter or group of letters added at the end of a word which makes a new word. The
new word is most often a different word class from the original word.

-ist -ly
A noun-forming suffix, -its means a person An adverb- or adjective-forming suffix, -ly
who makes, does, or practices. Examples: means when, how, like, or in the manner of.
artist, tourist. Examples: daily, slowly.
-less -fy
An adjective-forming suffix, -less means A verb-forming suffix, -fy means to make or
without or lacking. Examples: nameless, cause to be or become. Examples: amplify,
homeless. electrify.
-ness -ize
A noun-forming suffix, -ness means state or A verb-forming suffix, -ize means to cause to
quality of being. Examples: illness, happiness. be or to become. Examples: realize, organize.
