III. Procedure:
A. Preparatory Activities:
1. Motivation:
Guess the answer to the riddle.
I’m not a bird.
I’m not a kite.
But I can fly in the sky.
What am I?
2. Unlocking of Difficulties
a. I was unable to sleep because of my toothache.
b. My father was unhappy because of my mistake.
c. I got an imperfect score in Science. I was wrong in number 3.
d. A person who is disloyal cannot be trusted.
e. She could not untie the ribbon because it is too tight.
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation:
Listen as I read you this paragraph.
First Airplane
The first plane was designed by Wilbur and Orville Wright. The day they flew it,
it was unable to fly high. They knew that the design was imperfect. The brothers were
unhappy but they knew that flying was not impossible. They replaced their old design
with a new one and it proved to be a big success.

2. Analysis and Discussion

- Who designed the first plane?

- What are the underlined words which you have read in the paragraph?

- Look at the underlined words in the paragraph. What is the root word of each

word?

Unable- able

Imperfect- perfect

Unhappy- happy

Impossible- possible.

- What is the syllable added to the root word?


- Where is the syllable placed, at the beginning of the root word or at the end?
- What do we call the syllables added at the beginning of the root word?

Affixes- are groups of letters that are added to the beginning or at the end of the root
word that can change the word’s meaning.
Affixes have two kinds: Prefix and Suffix
Prefix- comes at the beginning of the word.
Example:
an- meaning to be without anti- meaning against
contra- meaning against dis- meaning nit
un- meaning not ex- meaning without
pre- meaning before uni- meaning one
bi- meaning two tri- meaning three
re- meaning again

Let’s take a look at how prefixes can be used to change a word.

What prefixes from the list can be added to change the word’s meaning?
You could add the prefixes uni, bi, or tri.

- A unicycle is a vehicle with just one wheel.


- A bicycle is a vehicle with two wheels.
- A tricycle is a vehicle with three wheels.

What is the meaning of prefixes un and in?


(un and in means not)
Prefixes dis, in, un and in , il, ir, means not.
Prefix re, means again.
3. Generalization
What is prefix?
- A prefix is a word part or syllable that is added at the beginning of before the
root word to form a new word.

A. Application
Read the sentences and identify the words used with prefixes.
a. Drinking unclean water causes sickness.
b. I will rewrite the whole paragraph.
c. She could not untie the lace of her shoes.
d. It is improper to answer without being asked.
e. A person who is impatient cannot be trusted.

Activity 2. Identify the meaning of the given word with the prefix. Put a box
