Local Stud Draft

The document discusses several studies on the relationship between teacher characteristics and student engagement. It notes that effective teachers recognize individual student differences, use both formal and informal teaching approaches, make clear requirements and allow student participation, and incorporate technology and student choices in a way that motivates academic engagement. When teachers establish supportive, trusting environments and give students opportunities to experience autonomy, it can increase their perceived competence and self-determination as learners.

According to Maria Theresa Barberos, Arnold Gozalo, et. Al, “The teacher must recognize individual
differences among his/her students and adjust instructions that best suit to the learners.” As a teacher,
they need to be more flexible based on what kind of personality and learning skills the students have. It
is a fact that teachers serve a variety of important roles within the classroom in their capacity as
educators. It is also stated that “Teachers are considered the light in the classroom”. In line with this,
teachers must lead the students on their journey, much like a mother in a family.

According to Mercedita B. Tongson, Ma-Elt and Edgar R. Eslit, Ph.D. (2018) in their research entitled
“Teaching Styles and Language Performance: Towards A Development of An English Language Program”,
there are two approaches in teaching: Andragogical (Informal teaching) and Pedagogical (Formal
Teaching). In contrast to the Pedagogical Approach which places more emphasis on direct learning and
does not always allow for individual knowledge to be taken into account, The Andragogical Approach
places more emphasis on building on students' prior knowledge and interests than on direct learning
and frequently focuses on teaching the same subject to all students at the same time. Along with
professors, students can also benefit from the expertise and experiences of their classmates.

As specified by Eleazar Cacapit De Jesus (2019) entitled “Senior High School Learners’ Academic
Engagement in Learning General Physics” Student engagement is known in maximizing the student
experience and improve learning outcomes, student development, and the performance and reputation
of the school, both students and their schools must spend time, effort, and other relevant resources.
Students requires time, effort and support from teachers and their schools for them to have a better
learning experience which can result to a better learning outcome and performance.

According to Cinches, et al.’s (2017) study, “teachers have an accountability to the level of academic
engagement of their students.” Student participation was strongly predicted by the effectiveness of the
teacher. Hence, because it was also a concept that teachers' qualifications are crucial, teachers have a
role as a student quality indicator to establish a teaching environment that encourages engagement of
students.

As stated by Dr. Armando P. Delfino (2019) in his research entitled “STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS OF PARTIDO STATE UNIVERSITY”, When the teacher's
requirements are understood clearly and the students have the chance to participate in decision-
making, learning becomes more engaging for the students. The teachers' educational methods were
also cited by the respondents as a key element in motivating people to participate actively. The study
also showed that teachers' usage of technology influenced students' motivation in studying in a
favorable way.

According to Neal Nikko D. Espejo (2018) in his research entitled “Difference in Academic Engagement
among College Students as a function of Learning Environment”, By allowing students to participate in
decisions about classroom decorum and associated activities, as well as provide them considerations
and/or a choice, teachers can give students some opportunities to experience these features. Teachers
have a significant amount of influence that their students can use. Students will feel trusted by their
professors and be able to handle a certain decision if they believe that their teachers offered these
components in the learning environment, they are in. As a result, learners will perceive themselves as
competent, in control, and self-assured, all of which are good indicators of academic engagement.
