CROSSING BOX CULVERT

1.0 INTRODUCTION
This method statement introduces the proposed activities to be undertaken and acts as a general
methodology for installation crossing precast box culvert activity in site. This has been prepared
to identify the work stages and the construction methodology for ensuring the works are carried
out in compliance with contract requirements.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this document is to outline the process for the installation crossing precast box
culvert across the road. It also outlines the materials used, machinery and equipment involved
for ensuring the works are carried out safely and in compliance with contract requirement.

3.0 SCOPE

The methodology will involve the following activities such as setting out, excavation, laying
precast box culvert, precast wingwall/headwall, concreting, filling and other related work.

4.0 METHODOLOGY

4.1 Survey and Setting Out

 A licensed surveyor approved by the Client will be engaged for setting out the
works or pegging for box culvert line.
4.2 Site Clearing

 After completing of the setting out, bulldozer and hydraulic excavator will carry out
the site clearing by felling the trees and cutting them into lengths suitable for
transportation. All the shrubs, roots and vegetation will be heaped together to be
removed from the site.
4.3 Installation – Precast Box Culverts

 Set out crossing angle for culvert in relation to road alignment.


 Most importantly, before starting of excavation, proper barricading along with
reflective marking with cautionary signboards shall be provided.
 Dumpers or tippers will help in loading excavated material by removing with help of
an excavator. The excavated portion shall be cleaned off if any slush, and it should
be dressed properly.
 Excavation for box culvert shall be in accordance to a depth and size as shown in
the drawing or in accordance with specifications.
 Construct foundations where required for bottomless structures.
 Place and compact bedding in accordance with specifications and drawings.
 Place precast box culvert to correct levels and falls and secure.
 Box culvert shall be laid as close as possible and the maximum gap in between
shall not be more than 20mm and the difference in level not more than 5mm.
 Ensure adequate anchorage of the culvert components against flood forces.
 Backfill either side of the culvert (and also between barrels where required) in
accordance with the specifications.
 Construct inlet and outlet structures (precast headwall/wingwall), as well as erosion
protection measures.
 To construct approach slab, compact base with hardcore lay lean concrete,
concrete base with reinforcement, starter bar to wall, formwork and place in
vibrated concrete grade as specifications.
 Backfill with suitable earth stockpiled and compact the sides.
