Classification Chart: WARNING BEFORE pulling or touching any plant, you must get the

teacher’s ok to be sure it is a safe plant to touch. We want to avoid poisonous plants. Wear
gloves and goggles at all times!

1. Photograph your speciman before pulling it. Include its environment in the photo.
2. Measure height. Pull the plant out of the ground.
3. Describe and measure all flowers, seeds, roots and leaves using your metric ruler.
4. Describe any other interesting observations, and tell what kind of plant you think it is.
5. If you do not know the name, you may ask your teacher or research it by its
classifications using http://plants.usda.gov/java/

Voca bulary Guide & Assessment Requ irements

Be sure you know the meaning of the vocabulary before you use it to describe your plant. All
vocabulary must be specific. Words like; cool, weird and awesome are not specific.
Here are some adjectives and suggestions to help you get started.

Leaves: Broad, needle-like, flat, round, smooth, rough, lobed, jagged.


Roots: fiberous, long, deep, complex, narrow…
Flowers: use color words, count the petals, cone in center, upright, bell shaped, heart shaped,
small, large, wide, etc.

Educreations Requirements:

1. Pick ONE sample you would like to present.


2. Include a photo of each of the categories in the chart: seeds, roots, leaves, flowers, and
the original photo before you had pulled it out of the ground.
3. Describe each part and what you have observed. Use specific descriptive words. You
may talk about the measurements, but it is not required.
4. Describe how you think these external parts that you have observed help this plant
survive in its environment and why you found it where you did.
