Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering involves investigating subsurface ground conditions to evaluate, design, and construct structures like foundations, retaining walls, and tunnels. Geotechnical engineers use principles of soil and rock mechanics. They require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a master's degree with specialization in geotechnical engineering. Geotechnical engineers work for government agencies, private construction and consulting firms, evaluating stability and designing structures interacting with soil and rock. Salaries range from 19,000 to 65,600 PHP per month in the Philippines, depending on experience level and location.

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

What is geotechnical engineering?

Geotechnical Engineering is the science that elucidates the mechanics of soils and
rocks and its engineering applications to the development of mankind. In early
times, the practice of Geotechnical Engineering was applied by trial and error,
observational experience and empirical experimentations. Problems, for example,
leaning tower of Pisa impelled geotechnical engineers to adopt a more scientific
approach to explore the subsurface.

What do Geotechnical Engineers do?

Geotechnical Engineer is a specialist who uses fundamental principles of soil and

rock mechanics to investigate surface and subsurface conditions of the ground.
This allows them to evaluate, design, analyze and construct works related to the
stability of natural slopes, man-made soil deposits, earthworks with cuts and fills,
shallow and deep foundations, dams, retaining walls, tunnels, bridges,
underground structures and many other works directly interacting with subsoil
and water. Besides this, they are also involved in ground improvement and
modification schemes, liquefaction analysis, geoenvironmental studies,
foundation failure studies, grouting and mitigation methods, railway and highway
embankment designs, landfill site design and dynamic analysis of soil/
foundations.

Requirements to become a Geotechnical Engineer

The qualification criteria required to work as a Geotechnical Engineer is Bachelor’s

degree in Civil Engineering or master’s degree with a specialization in
Geotechnical or soil and Foundation Engineering.

Job opportunities

Ample job opportunities are available for Geotechnical Engineers in both

Government and Private sectors. In the government sector, job opportunities exist
with PWD, urban planning departments, National Highway Authority of India,
Indian Railways, Metro Rail Corporations etc. and the private sector includes
consultancy firms, construction companies, mining agencies and infrastructure
development companies. Otherwise, starting a consultancy firm is also a good
opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer in which they can cater to various clients
such as builders, infrastructure developers, and Government agencies.

people working as Geotechnical Engineer(s) are earning less than 44,500 PHP
while the other half are earning more than 44,500 PHP. The median represents
the middle salary value. Generally speaking, you would want to be on the right
side of the graph with the group earning more than the median salary.

 Percentiles
Closely related to the median are two values: the 25th and the 75th percentiles.
Reading from the salary distribution diagram, 25% of Geotechnical Engineer(s)
are earning less than 28,600 PHP while 75% of them are earning more than
28,600 PHP. Also from the diagram, 75% of Geotechnical Engineer(s) are earning
less than 59,500 PHP while 25% are earning more than 59,500 PHP.

A Geotechnical Engineer with less than two years of experience makes approximately
21,500 PHP per month.

While someone with an experience level between two and five years is expected to earn
28,800 PHP per month, 34% more than someone with less than two year's experience.

Moving forward, an experience level between five and ten years lands a salary of 42,500
PHP per month, 48% more than someone with two to five years of experience.
Additionally, Geotechnical Engineer(s) whose expertise span anywhere between ten and
fifteen years get a salary equivalent to 51,800 PHP per month, 22% more than someone
with five to ten years of experience.

If the experience level is between fifteen and twenty years, then the expected wage is
