The document describes and compares several types of screw threads, including V-threads, British Standard Whitworth threads, Acme threads, knuckle threads, worm threads, square threads, and buttress threads. For each type, it provides the thread angle, depth, radius, and typical applications. V-threads are commonly used for fastening screws, while Acme threads are used for power screws and valves. Knuckle threads are resistant to debris, and square threads have high efficiency. Buttress threads provide increased pulling power compared to other designs.

SCREW THREADS

 “V” Shape Threads

This types of screw threads are also known as Unified Thread. It has a 60° thread angle. The
profile of this thread with standard proportions is shown in Fig. The dimensions of the
internal thread are is slightly different from that of the external thread.

 Thread angle=60°
 Depth = Pitch X0.54125
 Radius = Pitch X0.108

Applications
Sharp threads are also used as fastening screws for frictional connections such as screw connections
with anti-fatigue shafts or tension anchors. Sharp V-threads are not well suited for linear motion
applications or power transmission.

 British Standard Whitworth Threads

This type of threads is originated from great Britain. sir joseph Whitworth, a citizen of Great Britain
invented this thread in 1841. This thread was to provide the facility of interchangeability. It's known
as B.S.W. Thread.
 Thread angle= 55 °
 Pitch = 1/T.P.I
 Depth = Pitch X 0.6403
 Radius = Pitch X 0.1373
 Core dia = D- (1.28 X Pitch)
 (D= outer dia of bolt)

Applications

It was used on general brass work, gas fittings and brass tubing. It is also reported that antenna
bases should use this thread.

 Acme Thread
These threads are more or less like square threads but their shape is in taper i.e. flat from bottom
and thin from the top. It is comparatively easier to cut it on a job than the square threads. IT is also
considered stronger. AS these threads have slanting ends, it is easier to fix or unscrew the split nut
on it. There is no backlash in it. This thread is made at 29° angle.

 Thread Angle = 29°

 Depth of Thread = 0.5 X Pitch + .01"
 Crest = 0.3707 X Pitch
 Root = 0.33707 X Pitch - 0.0052"

Applications

It is satisfactorily used for power screws like breaks screw, jack screws and on the value operating
screw for axial power transmission.

 Knuckle Threads
Knuckle threads or round threads are an unusual highly rounded thread from. The large space between
the rounded crests and roots provides space for debris to be shifted to not interfere with the thread,
making this form resistant to debris and thread damage
 Depth of Thread= 0.5 X Pitch
 Root and crest Radius = 0.25 X Pitch

Applications

This thread form's good debris tolerance is the source of its use in oilfields, where it provides a
leak-free connection in field use. Many European automobiles use a knuckle thread for their "tow
eye," an external threaded recess where a steel towing lug can be fitted Some linear
actuators use a knuckle thread

 Worm Threads
Their shape is almost similar to Acme Threads but these are deeper than Acme threads. Their angle
is also at 29 °. This thread is used in worm wheel of motor vehicles for the transfer of power at 90°.
As three teeth of worm wheel fit into the shaft with worm threads, they fit well.

 Thread Angle = 29°

 Depth of Thread = 0.6866 X Pitch
 Root = 0.32 X Pitch
 Crest = 0.335 X Pitch.
Applications

It is use for Automatic door system, Musical instruments, Plastic worm screw mechanisms as speed
reducers in small motors, Lifts: Worm screws are also used in lifts or screw conveyors, Automotive
steering systems, Speed reducers

 Square Threads
The square thread form is a common screw thread form, used in high load applications such as lead
screws and jackscrews. It gets its name from the square cross-section of the thread. It is the lowest
friction and most efficient thread. The greatest advantage of square threads is that they have a much
higher intrinsic efficiency than trapezoidal threads (Acme or metric trapezoidal). Due to the lack of a
thread angle there is no radial pressure, or bursting pressure, on the nut. This also increases the nut
life form, but it is difficult to fabricate.

 Thread Angle = 90°

 Depth of Thread = 0.5 X Pitch
 Crest and Root = 0.5 X 5

Applications

The square threads are used in screw jacks, presses and clamping devices.

 Buttress Threads
It is a screw thread which is triangular in section but which has one face at right angles to the axis of
the screw, the second face only being sloped. IT has more pulling power than square thread. This is
why it is used in cases where the excessive pull is on one side and it must be absorbed as in a ratchet
 Root and crest = 0.125 X Pitch
 Thread Angle = 45°
 Depth = 0.75 X Pitch

Applications

Lifting screws for heavy lifting equipment Lead screws or power screws in machines with high loads
Transmission threads in turning and milling machines Screws in artillery equipment
