電磁HW02

The document is a homework assignment on electromagnetism consisting of 8 problems. Problem 1 involves calculating the divergence and curl of a vector function and applying the divergence theorem. Problem 2 evaluates a line integral using two different methods. Problem 3 calculates divergence and curl of vector functions and finds scalar and vector potentials. Problem 4 applies the divergence theorem to a vector function over a volume. Problems 5-6 deal with electric fields and potentials involving charged spherical shells and coaxial cables. Problem 7 calculates the work required to assemble an infinite chain of alternating charges. Problem 8 finds the electric field, charge density, and total charge given an electrical potential expression.

Electromagnetism Homework Sheet No.

Issued 7 Oct. 2020 and due 21 October 2018

1. (a) Find the divergence of the function

v  s(2  sin 2  )sˆ  s sin  cos ˆ  3zzˆ.

(b) Test the divergence theorem for this function, using the
quarter-cylinder (radius 2, height 5) shown in Fig. 1.
(c) Find the curl of v.
(Textbook, p. 45, Problem 1.43).
Fig. 1 Figure for problem 1.

2. Evaluate the integral J   e r (  )d (where V is a sphere of radius R, centered at the
V r2
origin) by two different methods, as in Ex. 1.16.
(Textbook, p. 52, Problem 1.49).

3. (a) Let F1  x2 zˆ and F2  xxˆ  yyˆ  zzˆ. Calculate the divergence and curl of F1 and F2.

Which one can be written as the gradient of a scalar? Find a scalar potential that does the job.
Which one can be written as the curl of a vector? Find a suitable vector potential.
(b) Show that F3  yzxˆ  zxyˆ  xyzˆ can be written both as the gradient of a scalar and as the
curl of a vector. Find scalar and vector potentials for this function.
(Textbook, p. 52, Problem 1.50).

4. Check the divergence theorem for the function

v  r 2 cos  rˆ  r 2 cos θˆ  r 2 cos  sin ˆ, using as your volume

one octant of the sphere of radius R (Fig. 2). Make sure you
include the entire surface. [Answer:R4/4]
(Textbook, p. 55, Problem 1.54).
Fig. 2 Figure for problem 4.
5. A thick spherical shell carriers charge density
  k / r 2 (a  r  b) (Fig. 3). Fig. 3 Figure
(a) Find the electric field in the three regions: for problem 5.
(i) r < a, (ii) a < r < b, (iii) r > b.
(b) Plot |E| as a function of r, for the case b = 2a.
(c) Find the potential at the center, using infinity as your reference
point.
(Textbook, p. 76, Problem 2.15; p. 83, Problem 2.23).

6. A long coaxial cable (Fig. 4) carries a uniform volume

charge density  on the inner cylinder (radius a), and a
uniform surface charge density on the outer cylindrical shell
(radius b). This surface charge is negative and is of just Fig. 4 Figure for problem 6.
the right magnitude that the cable as a whole is electrically neutral.
(a) Find the electric field in each of the three regions: (i) inside the inner cylinder (s < a),
(ii) between the cylinders (a < s < b), (iii) outside the cable (s > b).
(b) Plot |E| as a function of s.
(c) Find the potential difference between a point on the axis and a point on the outer cylinder.
(Textbook, p. 76, Problem 2.16; p. 83, Problem 2.24).

7. Consider an infinite chain of point charges, q (with alternating signs), strung out along
the x axis, each a distance a from its nearest neighbors. Find the work per particle required

to assemble this system. [Partial answer:  q 2 / (4 0 a) , for some dimensionless number ;

your problem is to determine . It is known as the Madelung constant. Calculating the

Madelung constant for 2- and 3-dimensional arrays is much more subtle and difficult. See
“Principles of the Theory of Solids” by J. M. Ziman, Sec. 2.3, (Cambridge U. Press, 1972)].
(Textbook, p.94, Problem 2.33)

8. The electrical potential of some configuration is given by the expression

V (r)  A(er / r ), where A and  are constants. Find the electric field E(r), the charge

density (r), and the total charge Q. [Answer:    0 A(4 3 (r)   2er / r ) ]

(Textbook, p. 108, Problem 2.50).
