According to UNICEF, cyberbullying remains predominant in the Philippines. 2It
affects almost half of Filipino children aged 13 to 17. 3Violence against children, which
includes online bullying, has destructive effects on young people's physical and emotional
well-being. 4This can create enduring emotional and psychological scars, as well as physical
harm. 5Victims deserve our compassion, and bullies deserve to be given a lesson from their
undesirable behavior. 6The government should take more concrete steps against different
forms of bullying. 7These include creating fully functional national helplines in reporting
such violence and capacitating teachers and parents to respond and prevent bullying from
happening. 8We must guarantee the safety of young people who are the most vulnerable ones.
C. Directions: Read the article below and answer the questions that follow.
Who would forget the year 2020? Taal volcano eruption, COVID-19 pandemic,
earthquakes, typhoon Molave (Quinta), super typhoon Goni (Rolly), and typhoon Vamco
(Ulysses) have made that year truly exceptional. For most Filipinos, it was the worst year
ever. Because of these disasters and the global health crisis, many have lost their homes, jobs,
and even lives.
According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the United
Nations, the Taal eruption which started the year displaced more than 500,000 people living
within the danger zone. In March, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. The government
strictly implemented a total lockdown from March to June, followed by several modifications
of the community quarantines in different regions. The needed quarantine measures led to
losses in income for both small and big businesses. Millions of Filipinos have lost their
livelihood too. As a result, the Philippine economy contracted or declined in the first quarter
of 2020, as World Bank reported. According to humanitarian assessments, more than 305,000
homes have been damaged or destroyed from October to November of the same year due to
successive, devastating typhoons in the Philippines. The rising number of COVID-19 cases
has made it even more challenging for people who were affected by these natural disasters to
bounce back and fully recover.
If there were good things in the year 2020, one would be the fact that our faith and
resilience have been ignited. Filipinos are known to be resilient, and we have stood the test of
times, especially amidst several disasters and crises. We manage to have

a positive outlook in life and find ways whatever it takes to survive and make a living for our
families despite the hardships. People who have lost jobs have found new and creative means
of living. People from different walks of life came out to help others and show concern to
everyone.
However, some say that the cliché has been overused by many to the extent that we just
let these problems and do not look for solutions. The authorities should take tangible or
concrete measures to help people affected by such situations. Indeed, this critical situation is
a challenge for all of us, especially our government. Is our resilience overrated, or is it what
genuinely defines our character? We should keep in mind that being resilient can be our
immediate solution to the challenges we face, and when we are praised for our resilience, it is
because we deserve it, and we live by it.
