RBI-Math 8

The document is a 20 minute lesson plan on factoring polynomials with the greatest common monomial factor (GCMF) for 8th grade students. It begins with reviewing factoring even numbers and expressions with a common variable. Students are shown how to find the GCMF of algebraic expressions by identifying common numerical and literal coefficients. Examples are provided, including finding the GCMF of 3 or more monomials. Students complete an activity and the lesson concludes with feedback and reminders.

RADIO TEACHER: (Review of the previous lesson and answering of previous quiz)
Today, we will be dealing with factoring of Polynomials specifically, the
Greatest Common Monomial Factor (GCMF) .
But before that, I would like you to observe the following images. On your
module under page 8. Can you give a description that is common to all of
them? For the sake of our Radio listeners the images are, Carrots, Oranges
and Squash. Once again, what are common to all of them? Very Good!
They are all orange in color. What Else? Yes! They are all good for your
health.
How about this second images? What is common among this four? Amazing! All
those four is Colors. Crayons.
What if I ask you, what is common in 2, 4,and 6 ? Very Good! They are all even
numbers and divisible by 2.
If we look at their factors, 2 has 1 and 2. 4 has 1, 2, and 4 how about the factors of
6? Yes! 6 has 1, 2,3, and 6. Observe that aside from 1 all of them has a
factor of 2. How about on this expression x, 2x, 3x and 4x?
They all have the same variable (x). Like in English and Science, we can also find
commonalities in Algebra specifically, the Greatest Common Multiple
Factor, just what you did in the constant 2, 4, and 6 and the expression x,
2x, 3x and 4x. Easy right!

3 RADIO TEACHER: (Introduction of the new lesson)
4 In this lesson, you will factor Polynomials with the common monomial.
5 One way to find the Greatest Common Factor of two or more numbers is prime
6 factorization. Let us determine a greatest common factor of 8 and 12. First
7 thing to do is write each number as a product of prime factors, 8 is equal o
8 the product of 2 x 2 x 2. Where 12 is equal to 2x2x3. Do you see the same
9 number each set of factors? Okay! Next is to identify the common factors
10 of the given numbers. You can show them by encircling the common
11 factors by pairs, last is to multiply the common factors. So what is the
12 greatest common factors of 8 and 12? Very good! The greatest common
13 factor is 4. Which is the product of the common factors 2 times 2.
14
15 How about the greatest common factors of algebraic expressions where there is a
16 variables and exponents? Since a variable represents an unknown value
17 we cannot use prime factorization o find the greatest common monomial
18 factor. So, how can we find the GCF of n3, n5, n6 and n9. What do you
19 remember about the variable n raised to an exponent? Yes! It means that n
20 raised to an exponent k, multiply itself k times to the given exponent. So n 3
is n*n*n, same goes to the expression n5=n*n*n*n*n, (it is equivalent to the
product of n written 5 times). Also wih the other expressions. What did
you observe? How many n is common in the factors? The greatest
common factor is n3 = n*n*n. Naiintindihan na po ba? Magaling

RADIO TEACHER: (Lesson Proper)
Polynomials – the word polynomial comes the latin- Greek words, poly meaning
many and nomen which means name or term. Therefore, polynomial
means many terms. A polynomial is as an algebraic expression that shows
a sum or difference of two or more terms containing whole number
exponents on the variable.
Variable -is a symbol which represents an unknown value. A constant is a
symbol or a number with fixed value. In an algebraic term, numbers form
the numerical coefficient while symbols form the literal coefficient.
In this example, the expression 4x2 – 2. This is a polynomial, since the variable
have non-negtive whole number exponent. This polynomial has two
terms, 4x2 and 2. The first term, has a numerical coefficient of 4 and a literal
coefficient x2. An Exponent, refers to the number of times and number that
multiplies by itself. The last term is the constant term, since there are no
variable multiplied to the number.
Now, we will determine, the greatest common factor of an algebraic expressions,
with numerical and literal coefficient. Find the greatest common factor of
4x3 and 8x2. 4x3 can be express as the product of 2 times 2 times x times x
times x. and 8x2 = 2*2*2*x*x. Next step, is to identify the common factors.
We can separate and align the numerical and literal coefficients to make it
easy. Can you identify which is common among the prime factors? Very
good! How many 2 are common? How many x are common? Precisely!
You can encircle this pairs to help as determine the common factors. The
common factors are 2, 2, x and x. last is to get the product of this common
factors. The product is the greatest common factors of the given expression
4x3 and 8x2. Multiply 2 times 2 times x times x. the greatest common factor
is 4x square.
Example 2: given the expression 15y6 and 9z.
What is the prime factorization of 15y6 the numerical coefficient can be factored
as 3 and 5, while the literal coefficient can be factored as y 6 times.
the factors of 15y6 = 3*5*y*y*y*y*y*y (
how about 9z? 9z =3*3*z. can you identify all common factors? Note that 3 is the
only common factor, hence, the greatest common factor of 15y6 and 9z is 3.
That is one method we can use to determine the greatest common factor of
polynomials. But there some cases where it seems that given pair of
monomials do not have a common factor.
Observe the monomials 4a2 and 9b2.let us start with the numerical coefficients 4
and 9. 4 can be express as the product 2 times 2. While 9 can be express as
the product of 3 times 3. Do they have a common factor? Right! In a glance
they seem don’t have a common factor. Remember that 1 is a factor of any
number. Hence, the greatest common factor of 4 and 9 is 1. Next are there
any common factors for the literal coefficientsa2 and b2. Since the
expressions do not have common variables, we can conclude that 1 is the
greatest common factors of 4a2 and 9b2. And if the GCF of the expressions
is 1, we can say that they are relatively prime.
How about if get the common factors of three monomials? What is the GCF of
the expressions 6a2b2, 3ab2 and 15a3b2?
First get their prime factors, 6a2b2 = 2*3*a*a*b*b. how about 3ab2? = 3*a*b*b. note
that we use two variables here so we can separate them in our solutions.
Then we have 15a3b2 = 3*5*a*a*a*b*b. now, identify the common factors.
the common factors of the expressions 6a2b2, 3ab2 and 15a3b2 is 3ab2.
