Basic Geometrical Concepts

Three or more points that lie on the same line are called collinear points. A line is a straight path that extends indefinitely in both directions. Two lines are intersecting lines if they cross each other at a single point, which is called the point of intersection. Parallel lines never meet and instead run in the same direction without crossing. Three or more lines that pass through the same point are called concurrent lines, with the common point being the point of concurrence.

BASIC GEOMETRICAL

CONCEPTS
IN THIS CHAPTER WE SHALL STUDY ABOUT COLLINEAR POINTS ,
INTERSECTING LINES , PARALLEL LINES AND CONCURRENT LINES
INTRODUCTION
❑POINT-A point has an exact location .It has no length,no breath and no height

.A POINT A
❑LINE-A line is a straight path which extends endlessly in both directions. So it has
no end points

A B LINE AB
PLANE
• Plane is a flat surface which extends endlessly in all directions .The table top ,the
surface of blackboard are some of the examples of planes. All these have flat
surface.
❑RAY-A ray has one end point and it extends endlessly in one direction

o A RAY OA
❑LINE SEGMENT-A line segment is a portion of line.It has two end points. It
has a definite length.

P Q LINE SEGMENT PQ
PROPERTIES OF A POINT AND A LINE
❑PROPERTY-1

An unlimited number of lines can be drawn passing through a given point in a plane

❑PROPERTY-2

One and only one line can be drawn passing through two given points in a plane. This
line lies completely in the plane.
COLLINEAR POINTS
❑Three or more points in a plane which lie on the same line are called COLLINEAR
POINTS.
A B C
In this figure POINT ABC lie on a line so they are called COLLINEAR POINTS
❑The points which do not lie on a plane are called NON-COLLINEAR POINTS
A
C
B
In this figure POINT ABC do not lie on a line so they are called NON-COLLINEAR
POINTS
INTERSECTING LINES
❑Two lines in a plane which cut each other at one point are INTERSECTING LINES.

❑The point where the lines meet is called POINT OF INTERSECTION.

Some examples of intersecting lines are-

1-Adjacent sides of blackboard
2-The X of English alphabet
3-Crossing roads
PARALLEL LINES
❑Two lines in a plane which don not meet anywhere are called PARALLEL LINES

l
m
In this line l is parallel to line m
❑Some examples of parallel lines

1-Window lines
2-Railway track lines
3-Lines on rulled paper
CONCURRENT LINES
❑Three or more lines in a plane which pass through the same point are called
CONCURRENT LINES.
l
D m
n
❑The point through which these lines pass is called POINT OF CONCURRENCE
❑Some examples of concurrent lines are –

1-Bicycle wheels and its spokes

2-Scissors
3-Hands of clock
