Deck machinery

and cargo handling equipment and its

principle of operation
An anchor windlass

An anchor windlass is a machine that allows you to raise and lower an

anchor that is attached to the ship with a chain.

• A notched wheel engages the

links of the chain.
An anchor windlass

A ship's hawse pipe is the pipe passing

through the bow section of a ship that
the anchor chain passes through
• From here the chain drops
downwards and is connected to the
anchor using a shackle.
Anchors

Anchors play a crucial role when

anchoring in waiting of port calls or
better weather, as well as when mooring
in bad weather with an anchor.
Anchor chains

The anchor chain is stored in the chain locker

where its end is secured to a ring bolt

welded to the chain locker bulkhead,
this is known as the anchor chain’s “bitter
end".
Construction

1. Main shaft
2. Gear box
3. Hydraulic or electric motor
4. Warping drum
5. Drum (storage part)
6. Drum (working part)
7. Gypsy wheel
8/9. Control lever for the band brake
Checks

Anchors, anchor chain, mooring ropes, and towing ropes are

collectively called "Equipment" .

Inspections of anchors and anchor chains are an

inspection items in a Special Survey and
Intermediate Survey.
• At the Docking Survey anchors and anchor
chain are ranged on the dock floor and the
surveyor carry out the survey.
Winches

Ship winch mounted and used on a ship and its necessary deck
equipment for the ship, which can be used for ship mooring,
towing and cargo lifting.
• the vertical winch is called capstan
Deck Cranes

A large number of ships are fitted with deck cranes.

These require less time to prepare for working cargo than derricks
and have the advantage of being able to accurately place (or spot)
cargo in the hold.
• On container ships using ports without special container handling
facilities, cranes with special container handling gear are essential.
Deck Cranes

The cranes can be delivered with safe working load of up to 50 tones

Specially designed offshore cranes

have an operator cabin and various
functions integrated within control
system, such as Active Heave
Compensation and auto tension.
Cylinder lifting ship crane

Comprises versatile cylinder that are particularly suitable for

container handling.

• The compact design not only

makes them flexible and fast but
also very space-saving.
Wire lifting ship cranes:

• heavy lifting cranes can also

be installed on specialized
vessels for the transport of
large oversized cargo.
All cranes should be able to perform the following functions:

• Lift the load at a suitable speed.

• Hold the load from running back.
• Lower the load under control.
• Drop the load smartly on the hold.
• Allow more power when overloaded on starting up again and
automatically lower the power when the load is relieved.
• Have good acceleration and retardation.
In addition to these, when the crane is electrically driven, the
following requirements should be satisfied:
• Prevent any over speed which will damage the motor armature.
Folding hatch covers
MacGregor hydraulic folding covers consist of two (or more) panels,
which are connected by hinges to form a folding pair.

In many cases, the hatch cover comprises

two folding pairs.
• One pair is stowed at the aft end of the
hatch and the other forward.
Folding hatch covers
The folding pair is operated by hydraulic cylinders acting directly on the
end hinge arms, which are connected at stools on the deck.

When the cylinders push the end panel up from the

closed position, the cover folds and the second
panel, fitted with wheels, rolls on rails to a stowage
position.
• The panels are usually secured in the open
position by semi-automatic locking devices
interacting with the wheel arms.
A double acting cylinder

A double acting cylinder pressurized fluid to both sides of the piston

alternatively and can creates forces to move the piston rod.

• Using a control system made up of a

2-, 3-, 4- way position valve can be
achieved the desired movement for
your application.

Hydraulic power units

Hydraulic power pack is a self-contained system that generally includes a

motor, a fluid reservoir, and a pump.

• It works to apply the hydraulic

pressure needed to drive motors,
cylinders, and other complementary
parts of a given hydraulic system.

Deck Cranes

Although crane motors may rely on pole-changing for speed variation, Ward-
Leonard and electro-hydraulic controls are the most widely used.
One of the reasons for this is that pole-change motors can only give a range of
discrete speeds, but additional factors favouring the two alternative methods
include less fierce power surges since the Ward-Leonard motor, or the electric
drive motor in the hydraulic system, run continuously and secondly the
contactors required are far simpler and need less maintenance since they are
not continuously being exposed to the high starting currents of pole-changing
systems.
