Program 2S Topical Test Chapter 7 (Form 4) 2011 Name: - Class

The document describes a titration experiment involving dilute sulfuric acid and potassium hydroxide solution. It asks the student to: 1) Draw a labeled diagram of the apparatus. 2) Identify the pipette as the apparatus used to measure 20.0 cm3 of sulfuric acid. 3) State that the reaction is neutralization, write the balanced chemical equation, and write the ionic equation. 4) State that the indicator changes color from red to green at the endpoint. 5) Explain that excess alkali is present when the solution turns blue. The second question asks the student to explain why glacial acetic acid does not effervesce with calcium carbon

Program 2S Topical Test Chapter 7 (Form 4) 2011 Name: ______________________________ Class: ____________________ QUESTION 1: 20.

0 cm3 of dilute sulphuric acid 0.2 M is pour inside a conical flask. Add a few drops of universal indicator to the solution. Then add potassium hydroxides slowly into the conical flask. 15.0 cm3 of potassium hydroxide solution needed to exactly neutralise the sulphuric acid. (a) Draw a labeled figure to shows the apparatus used in this titration experiment. [2 M]

(b) Name an apparatus used to measure exactly 20.0 cm3 of dilute sulphuric acid 0.2 M. [1 M] .. (c) Reactions happen in the conical flask between sulphuric acid and potassium hydroxide solution. (i) Name this reaction. [1 M] .. (ii) Write a balance chemical equation of the reaction. [2 M] .. (iii) Write an ionic equation for this reaction. [1 M] .. (d) State the changes of color of the solution inside the conical flask when it reaches the end point. [1 M] .. (e) How can you determine that the alkaline added to the acid is already excessive? [1 M] .. (f) (i) Calculate the number of mole for the sulphuric acid. [1 M]

(ii) Calculate the concentration of potassium hydroxide in mol dm-3 used in this experiment. [2 M]

QUESTION 2:

Glacial ethanoic acid does not release any gas when it is poured into pieces of calcium carbonate. However, effervescence occurs when several drops of water are added into the mixture of ethanoic acid and pieces of calcium carbonate Explain why this happen. [6 M]

Answer: 1 (a) (b) c) Diagram Pipette i) ii) iii) d) e) f) i) ii) Neutralization H2SO4 +2 KOH K2SO4 + 2 H2O H+ + OH- H2O Red to green Green solution turns to blue No of mol of acid = mol
2 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 2 Total 12 1 1 1 1 1 1 6

Mb = 0.53 mol dm-3

1. glacial ethanoic acid exists as molecules 2. no hydrogen ions present , no reaction with calcium carbonate. 3. when water is added to glacial etahnoic acid, it ionises 4. produce hydrogen ion 5. the hydrogen ion react with calcium carbonate 6.produce carbon dioxide gas Total
