Instructions For The TZXDuino

Front Panel

1. Down
2. Up
3. Stop. . if the Stop button is pressed when no file is playing then it will return
you to the previous directory of your SD card
4. Play/Pause
5. Menu. This will bring up a menu to allow you to change settings.

Rear Panel

1. 3.5mm Audio EAR socket

2. 2.5mm REM socket for computers with Motor Control e.g. MSX and Amstrad
CPC
3. Reset Button
4. 5.5x2.5mm DC socket. Negative to the centre. Use between 6v and
9v. WARNING: 9v MAY blow the Arduino Nano and is not recommended.
Left Panel

1. USB port. Use a mini USB cable to either change the firmware or power the
board

Right Panel

1. SD card slot for FAT Formatted Micro SD card

Usage

Please use a FAT formatted Micro SD card. A micro SD card of up to 32GB can be
used. Class 4 or higher is recommended.

TZXDuino has full folder/subfolder support and displays a ‘>’ symbol in front of the
name to indicate a folder.

Because of the way the Arduino software works the file organisation is based on
when the files went on the SD card and not alphabetically. If you want the SD Card
organised alphabetically I would recommend using a programme like FATSorter to
organise your SD Card.

You can use a Mini USB cable and a phone charger to power your device but we
would recommend using a universal DC adapter with adjustable voltage and a
5.5x2.5mm jack and set the voltage at either 6v or 7.5v.

Menu

The Menu has the following options

TSX Baud rate

Turbo Boost
Pause @ Start
Gremlin Loader

TSX Baud Rate allows you to change how fast MSX TSX files that use ID4B load.
You can choose between 1200, 2400, and 3600 baud. Many files will not load at
3600 baudrate

Turbo Boost allows you to switch on or off the option to load files faster for the
ZX80/81, Oric, and Acorn Electron. If you are using any other machine this should be
off.

Pause @ Start allows you to switch on or off whether the file pauses when you first
press play. Particularly useful if you are using a machine that uses the Motor Control
socket.

Gremlin Loader can be switched on or off to the best of my knowledge it only needed
for Footballer Of The Year on the CPC. This should be off for the majority of games.
File Types

TZXDuino can play the following file types

ZX Spectrum: TZX, TAP, and AY.

ZX80: P, TZX
ZX81: O, TZX
Amstrad CPC: CDT
Acorn Electron: UEF 1
BBC Microcomputer: UEF 1
Jupiter ACE: TZX
ORIC: TAP

1
UEF files need to be unzipped before they can be played on the TZXDuino.
On Linux machines this can be done by using GUNZIP.
On Windows machines this involves using WinZIP or WinRAR to decompress the
UEF file.
Once decompressed you will have a file with either no extension or a .hq extension.
Rename the file to add .UEF on the end.

Example
Rename JetSetWilly_B.hq to JetSetWilly_B.hq.UEF

There is a tool that can be downloaded from https://github.com/rickyelqasem/UEF-

Extractor that will unzip all UEF files and rename them. This is for Windows only.
