E. Discussion
As you all know our topic for today is about
Generalization and it is a very important lesson
that you must learn. Making generalizations is one
of the ways used when reacting or forming
judgments on critical issues that an individual may
hear or learn about. Specific details and evidences
have to be considered to be able to draw general
ideas or statements that are valid.
May I request (name of a student) to please
read the definition of Generalization.
Generalization
 A broad statement about a group of people
or things.
 When you make a statement about all or
most of the people or things together, you
are making a generalization.
 It states something they have in common.
Thank you (name of a student). Generalization is
not actually a hard topic because we always do it
subconsciously. First, we are generalizing when
we make broad statement about a group of people
or things. Second, when we make a statement
about all or most of the people or things together.
Did you noticed the difference between the first
and second characteristic of generalization?
In the first bullet, it talks about what kind of
statement which is broad and it is talking about
population because it used the word group.
However in the second bullet, it speaks about
describing or making a statement as a whole
population. Lastly, the similarities or common of
the population. (Name of a student) please read
the slide.
 There are certain words that signal or give
us a clue to recognize generalizations.
Sometimes  Always
Never Most
Many All None
Generally  Seldom

Thank you (name of a student). We can easily  Some generalizations are valid or true, but
recognized generalizations if it used these some are faulty or invalid.
following words. However some of
generalizations are valid or true, and some are
faulty or invalid. When we say faulty there is
something wrong in the statement or defect to
make it invalid. We will only understand what
makes a generalization valid and faulty after
(name of a student) read the next slide.

Valid Generalizations

topic.
 It uses logic and reasoning.
 It is proven with several examples.
Thank you (name of a student). Valid Example: All birds have wings.
Generalizations simply means true, with evidence,  VALID GENERALIZATION

For the example given, (name of a student). Please
explain to us why the example given is Valid
Generalization.

Very good. Now let’s proceed to Faulty (Answer of the student may vary)
Generalizations, (name of a student) please read
the slide.

Faulty Generalizations
 Faulty means false
 It is not supported by facts.
 Watch for key words: none, all, always, nev
er, everyone and nobody.
Example: All animals have four legs.
Thank you (name of a student). Faulty FAULTY GENERALIZATION
Generalizations is the perfect opposite of Valid
Generalizations because it is false,
not supported by facts and used the words none,
all, always, never, everyone and nobody. For the

to us why the example given is Faulty
Generalization.
Very good! So that is the end of our discussion for
today because we will now proceed to your group (Answer of the student may vary)
