Lesson Plan Department:: 2. Design of Field System To Design The Suitable Field System For A DC Machine

The document outlines the design of field systems for DC machines. It discusses factors to consider like mmf per pole and flux density, loss dissipated from field coils, resistance of field coils, and current density in field conductors. It also provides an expression for calculating the length of a commutator based on space for brushes, surface area for heat dissipation, peripheral speed, commutator segment pitch, and brush losses.

6. Mind map and Summary

Summary
The factors to be considered for the design of field coils are:
(i) mmf per pole and flux density
(ii) Loss dissipated from the surface of field coil
(iii) Resistance of the field coil
(iv) Current density in the field conductors
The length of commutator depends upon the space required by the brushes and upon the surface
required to dissipate the heat generated by the commutator losses.
Length of commutator Lc = nb (wb+cb) +c1+c2.
i) Peripheral speed
ii) Commutator segment pitch.
iii) Brush contact loss
iv) Brush friction loss
