8.0 Objectives
In this chapter, you will learn about :
• Sources of printer drivers
• Installing printer driver using CD
• Installing printer driver using default Windows drivers
• Installing printer driver by downloading driver from product
website
• Sharing a network printer using TCP, Bonjour and AirPrint
• Configuring printer settings
• Sharing a local printer

8.1 Installing a Printer

Before installing the Printer, make sure that the system meets
the minimum hardware and software requirements as mentioned
in the Printer’s User Manual.

8.2 Connecting Printer

Set printer near computer.
Install software that came with printer.
Plug the printer.
Windows will automatically find new printer and install
required additional software’s.
Printer will get installed.
If there is any problem in installing printer, download updated
drivers.

Sources of Printers drivers

1. USB Printers :
When printer connects by USB, OS detects it and attempts
to install it.

2. Manufacturer Websites :
You can search and download drivers from Printer
manufacturers’ websites.
E. g. if you are using printer of Canon, you can go to Canon’s
website and download drivers.
3. Other Websites :

Apart from manufacturer’s websites there are some websites

like NoDevice.com, DriverGuide.com, from where you can
download printer drivers.
Steps to install printer driver using CD.
Connect the printer to the computer using the USB cable and
then insert the software CD.
Double-click the CD drive.
Double-click the Setup file.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Steps to install printer using Windows default drivers.
Connect the printer to the computer using the USB cable.
Open the Settings app from the Start menu.
Click Devices and then click Add a printer or scanner.
Click the name of the printer
Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the installation.

 8.3 Setting the Printer as Default
Default Printer: Default printer is a printer which is used by a
program automatically unless user specifies any other printer.

How to set a default printer?

From Control Panel, access Devices and Printers.
Right-click the printer and select ‘Set as default printer.’

I. Steps to Install a Printer Driver
The following simulation shows the steps to install a network
printer driver. In this example, the network printer Samsung SL-
M2876ND is connected to your organization’s network and its IP
address is 140.10.6.53.
Firstly, you need to download the printer driver from the
product website.
1. Click the download link for the SL-M2876ND printer driver.

The printer driver is now saved on your local drive. All device
drivers are installed using the Control Panel.
2. To access the Control Panel, click the Start button and then
select Control Panel.
Note : You can search for “Control Panel” using the search
box of the Start menu.

 3. Select the Add a printer
using a TCP/IP address or
hostname option and click
the Next button.

4. Click the Device

type drop-down arrow
and select “TCP/IP
Device”.
You need to enter
the IP address for the
printer.

In this example, the IP address of the printer is “140.10.6.53”.

5. To access the printer driver from its stored location, click the
Have Disk button.
You can use the Browse option to access the driver’s saved
location.

Install the printer driver

Select the required printer driver.

6. Select Samsung M267X287X Series and click the Next
button.
7. Click the Next button.

8. Click the Next button.

You can click on Print a test page to check whether the driver
has been installed successfully.

 Note : You can follow the same steps to install the driver for
a printer connected directly to your system.
9. Click the Finish button.

2. Steps to Configure Printer Settings

1. To start printing a document, click File menu and to get the
printer settings, click Print.

Note : You can also use the command Ctrl + P to start

printing. For this demonstration, we have taken the example of
an MS Word document. The process is same for other common
applications.
The printer settings page displays where you can configure
settings as per the requirement. For this demonstration we will
show few settings.

2. To choose the correct printer, select the printer name from
the Printer drop-down menu.

• To configure the printer, click Printer Properties.

• To configure the basic properties, click the Basic tab.
Note : This Printer Properties page may change from Printer
to Printer

 5. To set the page to portrait mode, select the Portrait radio
button from Orientation.

6. To set the page to Multiple Pages Per Side, select the option
from Type from Layout Options.

7. To selected Double-Sided Printing option, select one of the

options with radio button. Note: For this demonstration, we
select Long Edge.

8. To select the number of copies, click the Paper tab.
To specify the number of copies, enter the number.

 Note : You can also select page size and other properties as per
your requirement.

9. Select size from drop-down menu of Original Size from Paper

10. Select source from drop-down menu of Source from Paper
Options.

10. To apply the settings, click OK.

11. To print the page, click the Print button

8.5 Summary
Before installing the Printer, make sure that the system meets
the minimum hardware and software requirements as mentioned
in the Printer's User Manual. Install software that came with
printer. After installation plug the printer, windows will
automatically find new printer and install required additional
software's. To install a network printer driver simulation is
provided.
