Mechanics of Deformable Bodies Solved Problems

This document contains 7 mechanics problems involving determining average normal stress, normal stress distribution, location of centroids, and average shear stress in beams, rods, columns, and pins subjected to various loads. The problems calculate stress values and sketch the stress distributions over given cross sections under forces, distributed loads, and couples.

Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

Solved Problems

The uniform beam is supported by two rods AB and CD that have cross-sectional areas of and 15
mm2 , respectively. Determine the intensity w of the distributed load so that the average normal
stress in each rod does not exceed 300 kPa.
Determine the average normal stress developed on the cross section.Sketch the normal stress
distribution over the cross section.

Determine the average normal stress developed on the cross section.Sketch the normal stress
distribution over the cross section.
If the 600-kN force acts through the centroid of the cross section, determine the location of the
centroid and the average normal stress developed on the cross section. Also, sketch the normal
stress distribution over the cross section.
Determine the average normal stress developed at points A, B, and C. The diameter of each
segment is indicated in the figure.
Determine the average normal stress developed
in rod AB if the load has a mass of 50 kg.The
diameter of rod AB is 8 mm.
The column is subjected to an axial force of 8
kN, which is applied through the centroid
of the cross-sectional area.Determine the
average normal stress acting at section a–a.
Show this distribution of stress acting over the
area’s cross section.
The lever is held to the fixed shaft using a tapered pin AB, which has a mean diameter of 6 mm.
If a couple is applied to the lever, determine the average shear stress in the pin between the pin
and lever.
