SCIENCE 4
-Matter can change from one state to another. Heating and cooling changes the size, shape,
texture and form of the materials.
-Some solid materials can change to liquid when heated or at high temperature. Liquid material
changes to gas form or water vapour. When cooled, the liquid materials are changed to solid.
-The solid material like ice change its form from solid to liquid, then from liquid to gas or water
vapour when heated. The water which is liquid material when placed in a cold temperature it
becomes solid. ---The materials (candle, chocolate/butter or margarine) changed its form from
solid to liquid when heated. It changed back to its form from liquid to solid when cooled. It also
changes its size, shape and texture.
-The changes that happen in the appearance of these materials is known as physical change. .
There is no new substance formed.
-Heating the material is to make an object warm or hot.
-Cooling the material is removal of heat or lowering of temperature.
Direction: Identify what conditions do the following show. Put a if hot and If cold.
________1. Margarine becomes liquid
________2. Oil becomes solid
________3. Ice drop melts
________4. Candle melts
________5. Water becomes ice
________6. Chocolate melts
________7. Solid material becomes liquid
________8. Butter turns to solid
________ 9. Boiling water
________10 Frozen ice cream
Lesson 2: Changes in Properties of Solid Materials when Mixed with other Liquid Materials
⚫ We used to mix/ combine solid with other solid materials which forms a mixture.
⚫ The mixture of solids, wherein we can still identify each material is called heterogeneous
mixture.
⚫ The mixture of solids that looks the same all throughout is called homogeneous mixture.
⚫ The properties of each solid material in the mixture do not change. The size, shape, color of
each solid material remains the same even after mixing.
⚫ Solid materials can be mixed / combined with liquid materials. Some solid materials completely
dissolved in the liquid, but others do not.
⚫ Some solid materials settled at the bottom of the container, while others stayed within the
liquid.
⚫ Some solid materials spread out evenly in the liquid materials, but some do not. When mixed
with the liquid, some solid materials changed their size, shape, and color, but some do not.
⚫ Liquid materials can be mixed with other liquid materials. While some liquid materials
completely mix with the other liquids, some do not. Two liquids that do not mix form two layers
like what you see with oil and water.
A. Direction: Below is a pair of materials mixed together. Write check ( ̸ ) if the solid material is
completely dissolve in liquid material and (X) if did not completely dissolve in liquid.
______ 1. pepper and vinegar
______ 2. Mongo seeds and rubbing alcohol
______ 3. Powder dye and water
______ 4. Salt and water
______ 5. Sand and cooking oil
B. Direction: The two liquid materials can be mixed. Write YES if the two liquid materials
completely mixed and NO if the two liquids do not mix and form two layers. Write your answer on
the space provided before the number.
