Lesson Plan 4-5 Force Field

This lesson plan is about force fields. It will teach students about three main types of force fields: gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields. Students will conduct experiments on each type of field, such as dropping objects to observe gravitational forces and using magnets to observe magnetic forces. The lesson aims to explain what a force field is, compare the different sources and directions of forces in each field, and analyze how force strength relates to distance from the source.

5. Compulsory Details/ Summary

In this level, there are three types of forces in nature;
gravitational force, a force that acts on an object within its
gratitational field, it causes the pull of gravity that made objects
drop to the ground; electric force, a force that exists between
charged objects, the direction of electric force can either be
attractive or repulsive in an electric field; magnetic force, a
force from the magnetic objects, a force acts on the poles of
the magnetic objects in attractive or repulsive direction.

Introduc

Step 1: Engage
1. The teacher greets students and reviews the knowledge
from the previous hour about moment of force using
engaging questions as follows.
 How many types of moment of force are there?
(Suggested Answer: There are two types: clockwise and
counterclockwise.)
 Give examples of application of moment of force in daily
life.
(Suggested Answer: It depends on the teacher’s discretion.
For example, it can be applied to make tools such as
scissors, hammer, etc.)
2. The teacher shows online video about Galileo's Famous
Gravity Experiment to the students, and asks students
using following engaging question, “From the video, when
we release a ball and feathers to fall in vacuum at the
same time, these two objects touch the ground at the
same time as well. Why?” Provide an opportunity for the
students to share their opinions freely.
79
Learning Unit 4: Forces and Motion
Lesson Plan 5: Force Field

(Suggested Answer: These two objects fall vertically

because only gravitational force acts on them without air
resistance.)

Step 2: Explore
1. Put students into three groups with the same number of
students in each group. Assign them to conduct
experiments as follows.
 Group 1: Gravitational Field
 Group 2: Electric Field
 Group 3: Magnetic Field
2. The teacher explains the instructions of each
experiment as mentioned below:
 Experiment 1: Gravitational Field- The teacher provides
sandbags with different sizes to students. Assign them
to drop sandbags with different sizes at the same height,
and then sandbags with the same size at different height.
Assign students to record the result of the experiment in
which sandbag touches the floor first.
 Experiment 2: Electric Field- The teacher provides a comb
to students. Assign them to comb their hairs and put the

paper near it, then record the result in their personal

notebooks.
 Experiment 3: Magnetic Field- The teacher provides a tray
containing iron powder and two magnet bars to students.
Assign them to put magnet bars under the tray for a
moment and observe the motion of the iron powder,
then record the result in their personal notebooks.

Step 3: Explain
3. Each group of students comes in front of the class to
present the result of the experiment. The teacher adds
more suggestions as he/she sees fit.
4. Together, students and the teacher discuss the result of
the Experiment 1: Gravitational Field, as follows, “When an
object is dropped freely or vertically, it will fall down onto
the ground because there is gravitational force acting on it.
This gravitational force is Earth’s gravity that pulls
everything toward the core of the Earth.”
5. Together, students and the teacher discuss the result of
the Experiment 2: Electric Field, as follows, “When we rub

two objects against each other, it causes electric charge

nearby. The area an electric charge can feel a force is an
electric field.”
6. Together, students and the teacher discuss the result of
the Experiment 3: Magnetic Field, as follows, “Iron powder
reacts to magnetic force. When it is in electric field, it will
move following magnetic field lines. The area a magnetic
object can feel a magnetic force is magnetic field.”
7. The teacher asks students to discuss and share their
opinions, using engaging questions as follows:
 Why are some objects not repulsive or attractive when
they are in the electric field?
(Suggested Answer: Those objects are the object that have
a balance of protons and electrons, which are electrically
neutral objects.)

Step 4: Elaborate
8. Pair students with their classmates. Assign them to scan
QR Code: Magnetic Field and Electric Field from
Mastering Science Work-Textbook Secondary 2B,
Learning Unit 4: Forces and Motion.
9. Assign them to study the meaning and types of force
field from Mastering Science Work-Textbook Secondary 2B,

82

Learning Unit 4: Forces and Motion, or other resources

such as internet.
11. The teacher provides an opportunity for students to ask
questions about force field. The teacher adds extra
explanations as he/she sees fit.
12. Students work on Worksheet 4.5.1: Force Field.
13. Assign students to do Exercise 1.1 from Mastering Science
Work-Textbook Secondary 2B, Learning Unit 4: Forces and
Motion.

Step 5: Evaluate
1. The teacher evaluates students by observing their
answers to the given questions, their behaviors when they
work individually and in group, and their presentations.
2. The teacher evaluates the result of experiment:
Gravitational Field, Electric Field, and Magnetic Field.
3. The teacher checks Worksheet 4.5.1: Force Field.
4. The teacher checks Exercise 1.1 from Mastering Science
Work-Textbook Secondary 2B, Learning Unit 4: Forces and
Motion.
5. Together, students and the teacher conclude the lesson
plan about friction as follows, “In this level, there are

three types of force fields: 1) Gravitational Field – When

there is gravitational force acts on an object, the object
will be pulled down to the ground as it is the gravitational
field, 2) Electric Field – it is an area around a charged
object where an electric charge can feel a force, 3)
Magnetic Field – it is an area around magnet. Magnet has
two ends: North Pole and South Pole.”
