G10 Pisa Melc 3.7-3.9

The document discusses several examples related to evolution and ecology: 1) A dog develops a genetic mutation that turns part of its fur black. This mutation would be passed on to 50% of its offspring, based on which parent each offspring receives the chromosome with the mutation from. 2) Three python species were previously considered one species but have diverged into distinct species due to geographic isolation (allopatric speciation). 3) A typhoon displaced people from their homes, decreasing the carrying capacity of the local ecosystem for species by reducing available resources. Humans could increase the trout population's carrying capacity by breeding more of the aquatic insects that are the trout's food source.

3.7 Explain the occurrence of evolution.

A labrador retriever suffers from a mutation while

growing. A patch of gold-colored fur turns black. Would
the same mutation affect this dog's offspring?
A. Yes, mutations are hereditary and are passed on to
offspring.
B. There is a 50% chance of the offspring getting the
mutation, based on which chromosome gets from which
parent.
C. Unless the other parent has the same mutation, the
offspring would not get the mutation.
D. No, a mutation in the fur would not affect the germ cells
of the dog and would not pass to its offspring.
Answer: B

3.8 Explain how species diversity increases the probability of adaptation and survival of
organisms in changing environments.
Until recently, three species of short-tailed pythons, Python curtus, Python
brongersmai, and Python breitensteini were considered one species. However, due to
the different locations in which they are found, they have become three distinct species.
What is this an example of?

A. divergent evolution
B. sympatric speciation
C. allopatric speciation
D. variation

Answer: D

3.9 Explain the relationship between population growth and carrying capacity.
Last October 29, Typhoon Paeng hit Capiz. Around 4.8M individuals are currently
seeking refuge in 823 evacuation centers and around 896,000 individuals are
temporarily staying with either family or friends outside the evacuation centers. What will
this do to the carrying capacity of the population of a specie within that ecosystem?
A. Increase it.
B. Will not affect it, so it will stay the same.
C. Always reduce it down to zero.
D. Decrease it.

Answer: D
A population of trout in a lake has significantly declined over the past year. The
main source of food for the fish in this lake are aquatic insects. Due to poor climate
conditions, there are significantly fewer insects and thus, not enough food to sustain the
population of trout in the lake. Trout is a food supply for larger fish in the lake and
without enough trout, other fish are negatively impacted in the lake. How could humans
alter carrying capacity, so the trout population returns to its normal level?
A. Humans could alter the carrying capacity by hunting the trout.
B. Humans could alter the carrying capacity by hunting the larger fish.
C. Humans could alter the carrying capacity by breeding the insects.
D. Humans could alter the carrying capacity by breeding the larger fish.

Answer: C
