Introductory Message
Welcome to Media and Information Literacy!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Media & Information Literacy Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will
be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Media and Information Literacy Activity Sheet is developed to help

you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

Identifying the Similarities and Differences between and among Media Literacy,
Information Literacy, and Technology Literacy

I. Learning Competency (MELC)

Identify the similarities and differences between and among Media Literacy, Information
Literacy, and Technology Literacy

II. Background Information for Learners

With the arrival of modern digital technologies, responsiveness and awareness of

media are playing very significant roles in today’s society. Media literacy, information
literacy and digital literacy are the three most prevailing concepts that focus on a critical
approach towards media messages.

Using the current and emerging media and technology in gathering data and
information will definitely be the turning point in achieving 21 st century literacy. Learners’
behavior in recognizing the various types of media and technology, knowledge on how
to operate and use these technologies, and making sound judgments regarding the
most effective technologies to use in specific situations can give learners advantage in
this time of uncertainty.

Learning how to be technologically inclined includes the ability to participate, to

understand and to critically evaluate processes. Learners can also use their individual’s
ability to navigate media environments skillfully and responsibly and to produce their
own content. The more students learn how to adapt and embrace critical thinking skills
related to information, media and technology, the more they will become effective 21 st
century citizens and workers.

Remember:

Wisdom is shaped and dispersed in all forms and formats. The more media and
information increase every day the more they become so abundant that they can
be found anywhere, anytime especially in the booming era of data and
information explosion. Becoming media and information literate individuals will
test our patience and endurance on how we deal with authentic and fake
information. It includes a certain level of respect towards those who need and
request it. Respect for information need means we allow each and everyone to
express their ideas, opinions, and expressions fully without any judgment or
prejudice. Media, information literacy teaches us to use information and media
content in an ethical, efficient, and effective manner.
