Pass Mark: 55: Ports and Maritime Organization Examination and Certification Directorate

This document contains a ship stability exam with 5 questions. The exam tests concepts like calculating ship displacement, free surface effect, draft changes from loading/unloading, metacentric height, list from cargo operations, and minimum stability requirements. It asks the examinee to perform calculations related to ship stability and describe stability concepts like the development of an angle of loll and the effect of GZ curve on ship stability. The exam contains both quantitative questions requiring calculations and qualitative questions requiring explanations.

Candidate’s Name:

Ports and Maritime Organization

Examination and Certification Directorate
Exam Code: SMSS

Subject : Ship Stability Date:

Rank : Second Officer (GT≥500) Time allowed: 2 Hrs
Pass mark: 55
Q.1) - A ship of 6600 t displacement, has KG =3.6 m and KM =4.3m .A mass of 50 t is
now lifted from the quay by one of the ship's crane whose head is 18 m above the keel.
The ship heels to a maximum of 9.5º while the mass is just lifted from the quay.
Calculate the outreach of the crane. (20M)

Q.2)- An oil tanker 24 m wide displaces 25000 t when loaded in 9 equal tanks ,each
10 m long ,with oil of relative density = 0.8
Calculate the total FSE with;
a) No longitudinal bulkhead. (5M)
b) A longitudinal centerline bulkhead. (5M)
c) Twin longitudinal bulkheads forming three equal tanks. (5M)
d) Twin longitudinal bulkheads, the center compartment having a width of 12.0m. (5M)

Q.3) - A ship 120 m long displaces 8000 t, MCTC =80 t-m, TPC=17.5 and LCF 2m
aft of midships. She sailed from port with drafts of 6.3m forward and 6.6m aft.
During the voyage the following changes have taken place;

Fuel used 200 t 18 m forward of midships

Water used 100 t 3 m aft of midships
Stores used 10 t 9 m aft of midships
Ballast added 300 t 24 m forward of midships

Calculate the arrival drafts. (20M)

Q.4) - A ship 7000t displacement has KM=7.3m. Masses of 150t at a cg of 3.0m

above and 60 t at a cg of 5.5m below the original CG of the ship are placed
onboard. A load of 76 t at cg of 0.6m is then discharged.
Calculate the original CG of the ship above the keel if the final GM is 0.5m and KM
assumed to remain constant. (20M)

Q.5) - With the aid of an appropriate sketch, describe the development of an angle of Loll
in a ship with initial negative metacentric height. (20M)

Rank : Second Officer (GT≥500) Time allowed: 2 Hrs
Pass mark: 55

Q.1)- A ship of 7500 t displacement ,has a double bottom tank 14 m long , 12 m wide and
1.2 m deep full of sea water . The KG is 6.7 m and GM=0.45m . Calculate the new GM if
half of the water is pumped out of the tank. Assume KM remains constant. (20M)

Q.2)-A ship of 110 m long is floating at drafts of 5 m forward and 5.5 m aft. The centre of
floatation is 2.5 m aft of amidships. TPC = 14 and MCTC = 135. Find the new drafts if a
weight of 500 t is loaded in a position 20 m forward of amidships. (20M)

Q.3)- A vessel of 10000 t displacement with KM=7.5 m and KG = 6.5 m , has pressed up
fresh water tank , measuring 35 x 10 x 1.8 m (the depth of the tank is measured from the
keel). Prior loading of 50 t cargo from the quay, the fresh water sounding is 1 m. Calculate
the list when the cargo has just been lifted from the quay by a crane , the head of which is
22 m above the keel and 15 m to port of the centre line. (20M)

Q.4)-A ship is 95 m in length, 18 m in width and is floating at a mean draft 7.5 m in sea
water. Cb (Block Coefficient) = 0.85

a) Calculate the displacement of the ship. (6M)

b) Calculate the amount of cargo to be discharged for the vessel to remain at the same draft
in fresh water. (8M)

c) State changes in following stability elements, when the vessel enters fresh water;
1-TPC , 2- KB , 3- KG (6M)

Q.5)-
a) With the aid of an appropriate diagram state the minimum stability requirements under
the Load Line Rules. (12M)

b) Explain how the value of GZ affects the stability of the vessel. (8M)
