Ewan Kailangan

This document provides examples and activities for solving equations that are transformable to quadratic equations. It discusses solving rational algebraic equations by clearing denominators to obtain a quadratic equation, which can then be solved using standard quadratic equation solving methods. Example problems demonstrate these steps, and activities provide additional practice problems for students to solve.

Lesson 1. 5. Equations Transformable to Quadratic Equations

Key Concepts:
1. Steps in solving quadratic equations that are not written in standard form
a) Simplify the given equation .
b) Write the resulting quadratic equation in standard form.
c) Use any of the four methods of solving quadratic equations in finding the solutions of the
resulting quadratic equation in step b.
d) Check the obtained values of x which make the equation true by substituting it to the
original equation.
2. To solve rational algebraic equations transformable to quadratic equations, the following
procedure can be followed:
a) Multiply both sides of the equation by the Least Common Multiple ( LCM ) of all
denominators.
b) Write the resulting equation in standard form.
c) Find the roots of the resulting equation using any of the methods of solving quadratic
equations.
d) Check the obtained values of x which make the equation true by substituting it to the
original equation.
Examples:
1. Solve x( x – 5 ) = 36
Solution:
x ( x – 5 ) = 36 x² - 5x = 36 Distributive Property
x² - 5x – 36 = 0 Writing in standard form
(x–9)(x+4)=0 Solving it by factoring
x–9=0 x+4=0
x= 9 x=-4
Check :
x= 9 x=-4
x( x – 5 ) = 36 x( x – 5 ) = 36
9 ( 9 – 5 ) = 36 - 4( - 4 – 5 ) = 36
9 ( 4 ) = 36 - 4( - 9 ) = 36
36 = 36 36 = 36
2. Find the roots of the equation ( x + 5 )² + ( x – 2 )² = 37
Solution:
( x + 5 )² + ( x – 2 )² = 37 x² + 10x + 25 + x² - 4x + 4 = 37
2x² + 6x + 29 = 37
2x² + 6x + 29 – 37 = 0
2x² + 6x – 8 = 0
( 2x - 2 )( x + 4 ) = 0
2x – 2 = 0 x+4=0
2x = 2 x=-4
2x 2
=
2 2
x= 1
Check:
x=1 x=-4
( x + 5 )² + ( x – 2 )² = 37 ( x + 5 )² + ( x – 2 )² = 37
( 1 + 5 )² + ( 1 – 2 )² = 37 ( - 4 + 5 )² + ( - 4 – 2 )²= 37
( 6 )² + ( -1 )² = 37 ( 1 )² + ( - 6 )² = 37
36 + 1= 37 1 + 36 = 37
37= 37 37 = 37

24 + x ( x – 3 ) = 8x
24 + x² - 3x = 8x
x² – 3x – 8x + 24 = 0
x² - 11x + 24 = 0
(x–8)(x–3)=0
x– 8 = 0 x–3=0
x=8 x=3
Check:

x−2 ) = (1+ x−2
4x
) ( x – 2 ) LCM: ( x – 2 )
( x -2 )( x ) + 8 = ( x – 2 ) + 4x
x² - 2x + 8 = x – 2 + 4x
x² - 2x + 8 = 5x – 2
x² - 2x – 5x + 8 + 2 = 0
x² - 7x + 10 = 0
(x–5)(x–2)=0
x–5=0 x–2=0
x= 5 x=2

Check:

Note: Observe that at x = 2 the value of and is undefined or does not exist.
x−2 x−2
Therefore x = 2 is an extraneous root or solution of an equation.
Extraneous root or solution is a solution of an equation derived from an original equation
which is not a solution of the original equation.
