Gyro Error by Altitude Method

This document provides instructions for finding gyro error and determining true azimuth, course, and other celestial navigation values using altitude and azimuth measurements of celestial bodies. Key steps include looking up values like Greenwich Hour Angle, declination, and local hour angle in the Nautical Almanac and using trigonometric formulas involving latitude, declination, and local hour angle to calculate the true azimuth and gyro error. Rules are provided for determining the azimuth quadrant based on the relationship between local hour angle and declination.

FINDING GYRO ERROR CELESTIAL BODIES

DR position Lat. _____________________N/S Long. ____________________E/W

(Z) Azimuth of the sun : __________________

Gyro Course: ________________ Magnetic compass: ________________ Var.: _______________

Find: (Zn) True Azimuth, Gyro Error, True Course, Total Error and Deviation

__________________________________________________________________________________________

GMT: ______________________ at sight open NAUTICAL ALMANAC and look for GHA, Decl., Increments and LHA
GHA: ______________________ Decl.: ________________N/S d.corr. + or – ________
Incmnt: ___________________d.corr. _______
GHA: ______________________ Decl.: ________________N/S
Ass Long.: __________________ (add E, subtract W)
LHA: ______________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________
L~D same name (+)
L~D diff name (-)
Solve by Altitude Method: (Formula )
Sin Hc = ( cos Lat x cos Decl. x cos LHA ) +/- ( sin Lat x sin Decl. ) = Shift sin = Hc __________________
Sin Z = (sin LHA x cos Decl. ) = / ( cos Hc ) = shift sin = Z ___________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Rules: Azimuth(Z) takes name of Declination and LHA where by: LHA between 0 to 180 = East
LHA between 180 to 360 = West
Therefor shift sin =Z :NE (same) SE (-180) SW (+180) NW (-360) or look direct to gyro repeater & see what
Quadrant the azimuth belong.

(True Bearing) or ZN = _________________ Checking:

(Gyro Bearing) G/B = _________________(G/B best G/E ( W) (E+)(W-) C =___________

Gyro Error) G/E = _________________ + / - D = ___________

(Gyro Course) G/C = _________________ M =___________

(True Course) T/C = _________________ V = ___________

(Magnetic Co.)M/C = _________________(M/C best T/E (W) ( always – T/C to M/C ) T = ___________

(Total Error) T/E = _________________

Variation) Var. = ________________ (always change the sign of var.)

(Deviation) Dev. = ________________ E/W
