STEM - BC11D IIIh 1

This lesson plan outlines a session on higher-order derivatives of functions for a grade 11 calculus class. The objectives are to compute higher-order derivatives of functions and relate them to real-life situations. The session will review differentiation rules and demonstrate computing second, third, and fourth derivatives of example functions. Students will practice finding derivatives of various orders in groups and individually. The assignment is to find the first five derivatives of given functions.

LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 11 BASIC CALCULUS

S.Y. 2016 - 2017

Quarter III Content : Derivatives

Content Standard : The learners demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts of
derivatives.
Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to formulate and solve accurately
situational problems involving related rates.
Learning Competency: The learners compute higher – order derivatives of functions.
(Code: STEM_BC11D-IIIh-1)
Session Date : _____________ ; 60 minutes

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of one- hour session, at least 75% of the students should be able to:
Compute higher-order derivatives of functions; and
Relate the concept of higher-order derivatives to real-life situations.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

A. Session Topic : HIGHER – ORDER DERIVATIVES OF FUNCTION
B. Materials Needed : sheet of paper, LCD projector, netbook, manila paper,
marker, masking tape
C. References : SHS Curriculum Guides
Calculus with Applications
III. LEARNING PROCEDURE:
 Preliminaries:
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance
 Review of the Previous Lesson
 The teacher will review on the differentiation rules
1. The Power Rule
2. The Product Rule
3. The Quotient Rule
4. The Chain Rule
5. Trigonometric Functions Derivatives

 Motivation:
 The teacher will group the students into 6 groups. Instructions will
then be given to the students.

1. Each group will be provided a piece of paper.

2. Fold the paper forming equal or the same size.
3. Do step 2 six times.

After the motivation, the teacher will ask the following:

1. What can you say about the activity?
2. What steps did you take?
3. Based on the activity, can you guess our topic for today?
A. Introduction

Recall from the equation y = f(x), we get by differentiation the equation:

dy ' '
=f ( x )= y =D x y First derivative
dx
Hence f’(x) is itself a function of x and may be differentiated again with respect to x.
2
d y ''( ) '' 2
2
=f x = y =Dx y Second derivative
dx
3
d y ' ' ( ) ' '' 3
3
=f ' x = y =D x y Third derivative
dx
4
d y (4 ) ( ) (4) 4
4
=f x = y =Dx y Fourth derivative
dx
5
d y (5 ) ( ) (5) 5
5
=f x = y =D x y Fifth derivative
dx
n (n ) (n) n
d y=f ( x )= y =D x y nth derivative

B. Modeling: “I DO”

Let’s start with the following function.

3 2
f ( x )=5 x −3 x +10 x−5
By this point we should be able to differentiate this function without any problems. Doing
this we get,
2
f ' ( x )=15 x −6 x +10.
Now, this is a function and so it can be differentiated. Here is the notation that we’ll use for
that, as well as the derivative.
'
f '' ( x )=( f ' ( x ) ) =30 x−6
This is called the second derivative and f ' ( x ) is now called the first derivative.
Again, this is a function so we can differentiate it again. This will be called the third
derivative. Here is that derivative as well as the notation for the third derivative.
'
f ' ' ' (x)=( f ' ' ( x ) ) =30
Continuing, we can differentiate again. This is called, oddly enough, the fourth derivative.
We’re also going to be changing notation at this point. We can keep adding on primes, but that will
get cumbersome after awhile.
'
f (4 ) (x)= ( f ' ' ' ( x ) ) =0
This process can continue bur notice that we will get zero for all derivatives after this point.
This set of derivatives leads us to the following fact about the differentiation of polynomials.

Fact:
If p(x) is a polynomial of degree n (i.e. the largest exponent in the polynomial)
then,
( k)
p ( x ) =0 for k ≥ n+1

We will need to be careful with the “non-prime” notation for derivatives. Consider each of
the following.
'
f (2) (x )=( f ' ( x ) )
(2) 2
f (x )=[f ( x ) ]
The presence of parenthesis in the exponent denotes differentiation while the absence of
parenthesis denotes exponentiation.

Collectively the second, third, fourth, etc. derivatives are called higher order derivatives.

B. Guided Practice: “WE DO” : Think – Pair – Share!

1. Find the first, second, and third derivatives of f( x) = 5 x 4

3
3x + 7x 2 − 9x + 2.

2. Find the first, second, and third derivatives of y = sin 2

x.

3. Find f (3)
(4) if .

(a)
(b)
(c)

E. Application/Assessment: Diad
