5.3. Guideline For Navisworks Manage (4D Simulation)

This document provides instructions for creating a 4D simulation in Navisworks using a Revit model, MS Project schedule, and the following steps: 1. Export the Revit model to IFC format and import into Navisworks. 2. Import the MS Project schedule file into Navisworks and rebuild the task hierarchy. 3. Link elements from the 3D model to tasks in the schedule using the selection tree or 3D view. 4. Animate the 4D simulation by playing it back in Navisworks. 5. Export the animation, such as in AVI format. Tips are also provided for saving Navisworks files.

1. Export Revit Model to IFC format

1. Export Revit Model to IFC format

Open ‘Navisworks Manage 2022’

Open ‘Navisworks Manage 2022’

NOT THIS ONE – Navisworks Manage 2022 (BIM 360)

Import 3D model (IFC)

Import 3D model (IFC) – Select IFC (*.ifc) for the file type and open
2. Import scheduling file – Home -> TimeLiner -> Data Sources -> Add ->
Microsoft Project 2007-2013

2. Import scheduling file – Open ‘Lab3_MS_Schedule.mpp’ file
2. Import scheduling file – Click ‘OK’
2. Import scheduling file – ‘TimeLiner’ -> ‘Data Sources’ -> Right click ‘New Data
Source’ -> ‘Rebuild Task Hierarchy’

❷ Right click
2. Import scheduling file – Go to ‘Tasks’
3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’
Logic
1) Select 3D model element
2) Select schedule task
3) Link

Approaches
• Selecting the element in 3D view
• Selecting the element in ‘Selection Tree’ (Similar to model browser in ACC
Takeoff)
3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using 3D view) Link Slab on
Grade

❶ Select ‘Slab on Grade’ element

❸ Click ‘Attach Current Selection’

❷ Select ‘Structural Slab on Grade’ task

3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using 3D view) Link Slab on
Grade

❹ Select ‘Construction’ task type

3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree)

❶ Click ‘Selection Tree’

❷ Click ‘Auto Hide’
3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree) Link
Columns

❶ Click ‘ifcColumn’ in Level 1

❸ Click ‘Attach Current Selection’

❷ Select ‘Column’ task

3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree) Link
Columns

❹ Select ‘Construction’ task type

3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree)
Follow the previous procedure for Beams

❶ Click Beams in Levels 2 - 5

❸ Click ‘Attach Current Selection’

❹ Select ‘Construction’ task type

❷ Select ‘Beam’ task

3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree)
Follow the previous procedure for Slabs

❶ Click Slabs in Levels 2 - 5

❸ Click ‘Attach Current Selection’

❹ Select ‘Construction’ task type

❷ Select ‘Upper Floor Construction’ task

3. Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree)
Follow the previous procedure for Walls and Windows
4. Animate 4D – Go to ‘Simulate’ and ‘Play’

4. Animate 4D – Go to ‘Simulate’ and ‘Play’
We linked ‘Slab on Grade’ to a high-level task (‘Structural Slab on Grade’)
-> We can link the 3D model element to lower levels
Add Task Type Configurations

❸ Add ‘Task Types’

Formwork Green (90% Transparent) Yellow

Rebar work Yellow (90% Transparent) Purple
Concrete work Purple (90% Transparent) Model Appearance
Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree) Follow
the previous procedure for ‘ifcSlab’ in Level 1

❶ Click ifcSlab in Level 1

❸ Click ‘Attach Current Selection’

❷ Select three tasks

Linking ‘3D model elements’ to ‘schedule tasks’ – (Using Selection Tree) Follow
the previous procedure for ‘ifcSlab’ in Level 1

❺ Remove task type for ‘Structural Slab on Grade’

❹ Select ‘Formwork’ / ‘Rebar work’ / ‘Concrete work’

4. Animate 4D – Adjust simulation options

❸ Interval Size: 5 Hours (to

see how the color changes for
the ‘Slab on Grade’
Playback Duration: 15 seconds

4. Animate 4D

5. Export Animation

❶ ‘TimeLiner Simulation’
❷ ‘Viewport’
❸ ‘Windows AVI’

Tips for saving files

Two ways to save your NavisWorks files (.nwd and .nwf)

• .nwd: If you save your NavisWorks file with .nwd type, the file will
become the independent file, so you don’t need other reference files
(schedule file or/and original Revit model file) to re-open the file
• .nwf: If you save your NavisWorks file with .nwf type, you still need
reference files (schedule file or/and original Revit model file) to re-open
the fil
