developed: is a noun that becomes plural by changing its spelling in other ways than adding an “s”
or “es” to the end of the word. This change can happen in a variety of ways.

Introductory Activity 1. Recall the classroom rules.
( 5 min) 2. Review the rules in forming the plural form of regular nouns using the fishbowl
technique.
1.1 Why is it important to follow rules and regulations?
1.2 What will happen if we do not follow the rules?
2. Show a picture of a foot on one side and two feet on the other side.

3. Ask the students to tell how the pictures are alike or different.
4. Label the pictures with the words foot and feet.
5. Discuss what you notice with the spelling of the nouns.

Activity
( 10 min) 1. The teacher reads first the poem followed by the pupils.

The Trouble with English Plurals

We’ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes;


But the plural of ox should be oxen, not oxes;
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
But the plural of house is houses, not hice,
If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen,
If I spoke of my foot and showed you my feet,
When I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and the whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?
If the singular is this and the plural is these,
Why shouldn’t the plural of kiss be kese?
Then one may be that, and three could be those,
Yet the plural of hat would never be hose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren,
So plurals in English, I think you’ll agree,
Are indeed very tricky, singularly.

Analysis Group Activity:


( 5 min) Each group should be given different tasks in pluralization of nouns.
Group 1: This group will be given lists of words which they’ll will form it in their plural
form. They will show the class the things in singular and its plural forms.
1. tooth
2. child
3. box
4. man
5. woman
Group 2: Circle the irregular plural noun in each sentence below.
Example: The (children / childs) went to the assembly after lunch.
Answer: children
1. The (person / people) at the conference clapped for the new president.
2. The (goose / geese) walked across the road to get water.
3. He had problems with his (feet / foot).
4. The (men / man) didn’t know how to fix the roof.
5. The school (child / children) were prepared for the test.

Group 3: Arrange the letters to find the plural form of the words given

Abstraction 1. How do you form the plural form of irregular nouns?
(10 min)
Irregular nouns made plural by changing vowels, changing the word, or adding a
different ending:
More than one man = men
More than one person = people
More than one mouse = mice
More than one child = children
More than one foot = feet
More than one goose = geese
More than one tooth = teeth
More than one louse = lice
More than one cactus = cacti
More than one appendix = appendices
More than one ox =oxen
Some irregular plural nouns have the same spelling as their singular form such as
scissors, pants, bison, deer, and sheep
Application 1. Let the pupils choose and write clear and coherent sentences using the plural
( 5 min) form of irregular nouns listed on the chart.
