11.1) Slab thickness: Considering a sample grid of 150mm, the slab thickness can be calculated
as follows:
fy = 30 N/mm2 kc = compression reinforcement
fck =500 N/mm2 factor
Grid sizing kt =1.15
Length , L = 7m kc = 1.05
Breath , B =5m Hence L/d =L/d (basic) x kt x kc
Check for one way or two way = 26x1.15x1.05 =31.4
slab Depth calculation
L/B = 7/5 =1.4<2 : Two way For L = 7m
fs = Fe x0.87/1.5 =500 x 0.87/1.5 d = 5m

Percentage of steel reinforcement: Cover = 25 mm
Consider Pt = 0.5%% Hence D required=7000 mm
L/d ratio required = L/d x kt x kc Provide thickness of slab =
L/d (basic) = 26 (for continuous 150mm
slab)
kt = tension reinforcement factor

 LL per sqm= 4 kN/m2 Depth of the beam, D = 600mm
 Total load = 11.55 kN/m2 We are providing secondary beam in 7m
Tributary length = 7/2 = 3.5m span
Line load from tributary area  Main beam as 300 x 600 mm
Load on the edge beam  Secondary beam as 300x 500 mm

 Tributary area = 26.25 sqm
 Load on tributary area = 20.175 kN/sqm
 Load on column (one floor) = 510 kN
 Load on all 8 floors =510x 8 = 4080kN
 Ultimate load = 1.5 x 4080 = 6120 kN

TASK – 5
14. Design and Detailing of Elements
14.1 Slab Design
Continuing from section 11.1, Consider the same slab.
Dimension =3.5m x 5 m internal panel
Thickness, D= 150 mm, Consider 8 mm dia bars for reinforcement,
effective depth: d = 150-25-10/2= 120mm
Fck = 30 N/mm2 and fy = 500 N/mm2
Result from ETABS software. Max moment at center Mu1=12 KNm
Max moment at support Mu2= 24KNm

Mu lim = 0.133 fck bd2 = (0.133x30x1000x1202 / 106 = 57.5kNm

Mu < Mu limt : Hence depth provided is sufficient
Check for reinforcement (+ve moments @ midspan)
Main bars:
Substituting the values in above equation pt = 0.17 %
Ast = bd pt/100 = 225mm2; Hence provide 10 mm dia bars at 300 mm c/c
Distribution bars: Similarly, for the other direction substituting the Mu2 pt = 0.35%
Ast = bd pt/100 = 525mm2; Hence provide 10 mm dia bars at 150 mm c/c

Provide design one of the continuous slab for one grid (from left to right of the building) along
with its detailing. Provide the detailing of the slab similar to the reference sketch below.

14
14.2 Beam Design
Basic Data
Consider the beam B74, in 7th floor
Length (span) = 7 m =7000mm
Width: b = 300 mm
Depth: D = 600 mm
Fck = 30 N/mm2
Fy = 500 N/mm2
Force values from ETABS analysis:
Deflection, .max = 4 mm
Max shear force, Vu= 167 kN
Max moment @ mid: Mu = 213 kNm
Max moment @ support: Mu = 137 kNm
Effective depth: d =600-25-20/2= 565 mm
Main bottom reinforcement (mid span)

Ast = 0.5 fck/fy (1 - (1-4.6 Mu/fck bd2)) bd =

= 0.5 x 30/500(1 - (1-4.6x213x106/30x300x5652)300x565
= 1245mm2
Provide 5 no’s 20 mm dia bars.
Hence pt provided = …………..%
Top reinforcement (at supports)
Ast = 0.5 fck/fy (1 - (1-4.6 Mu/fck bd2)) bd

= 0.5x50/500(1-  (4.6x137x106 /30x300x5652 )300x565

=592 mm2
Provide 3 no’s 16 mm dia bars.
Check for reinforcement
Minimum Ast = 0.85 bd/fy = 288 mm2
Maximum Ast = 0.04 bD = 7200 mm2:
Hence reinforcement provided is OK

15
Shear reinforcement
v = Vu/bd =167x 1000/300x565 = 0.88N/mm2

IS 456: 2000, Cl 40.1 - c max = 3.5 N/mm2 ,

Since v < c max, dimensions of beam are ok

From Table 19: c = 0.685 N/mm2

v > c , Hence provide shear reinforcement

Vuc = c bd =116.11 kN
Vus = Vu - Vuc = 50.89 kN
Provide 8mm dia 2 legged stirrups: Area = Asv = 100.53mm2
Spacing of Shear reinforcement (Sv)
The least value out of the following 4 conditions should be used; Cl 26. 1.6
i) : Sv = 485 mm

ii) : Sv = 364 mm
iii) Sv = 0.75 d = 0.75 x 565 = 424 mm
iv) Sv = 300 mm
Hence, provide 8 mm dia 2 legged stirrups at 300mm c/c spacing as shear reinforcement
Deflection check
The deflection should not exceed l/250 = 7000/250 = 28mm

Or 20 mm, whichever is less, here deflection  = 4mm, which is under limit.

Check for torsion
Torsion design shall be done as per Cl. 40 of IS 456: 2000. Since in this case, the torsion value
on the beam is very minimal, its avoided.
Development length
s = 500 N/mm2 , bd = 1.5x1.6 = 2.4

 = 20 mm (from Table 26.2.1.1, IS 456)

Ld = 20x500/ 4x2.4 = 1041 mm ~ 1m
Beam design
Provide design one of the continuous beam for one grid (from left to right of the building) along
with its detailing. Provide the cross sectional and longitudinal sections of the beam similar to the
reference sketch below.

16
14.3 Column Design for GF
Consider the ground floor column
Height (span) = 3.6 m = 3600 mm
Width: b = 500 mm
Depth: D = 500 mm
Fck = 30 N/mm2
Fy = 500 N/mm2
Force values from ETABS analysis:
Max axial force, Pu = 4166 kN
Major axis moment, Mu = 115 kNm
Cover provided d’ = 40 mm
d’/D = 40/600 = 0.066 =0.05
Pu/fck.b. D = (4166x103 )/(40x400x600) = 0.44
Mu/fck.b. D2 = (115x 106)/ (40x400x6002) = 0.02
From PMM interaction curve of SP 16; Chart 47: pt/fck = 0.02
Pt = 0.02 x 40 = 0.8%, Hence provide Ast = 400x600x0.8/100 = 1920mm2
Provide 8 numbers 20 mm dia bars as main reinforcement
Stirrups dia = Highest of {max/4, 6mm} = 6mm, but due to practical constrains provide 8mm
dia for stirrups.

Stirrups spacing = Least of {D, 16.max, 300mm} = 300 mm.

Hence provide 8mm dia ties @ 300 mm c/c spacing

17
Column design
Provide design one of the columns for one grid (from top to bottom of the building) along with
its detailing. Provide the cross sectional and longitudinal sections of the column similar to the
reference sketch below.

Detailing

14.4 Shear wall

Total Height of wall (hw) = 34000 mm
Length of wall (Lw) = 3900mm

Thickness of wall (t w)= 300 mm

As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.2.1)

Effective depth of wall, dw eff = 0.8xLw

= 0.8 x 3900=3600 mm
Factored BM, Mu = 1.2 x 4812 = 5775 kN-m

Factored SF, Vu = 1.2 x 690 =828 kN

tw = (300 mm) > 150

18
As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.2)

1. Section Classification [As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.2)]

ℎ𝑤

𝐿𝑤

Note: [ 𝐿 𝑤 < 1 − Squat Wall ,
𝑤
ℎ𝑤
1 ≤ 𝐿 ≤ 2 − Intermediate Wall ,
𝑤
ℎ𝑤

𝐿𝑤
Hence it is slender wall.

2. Design of Shear Reinforcement (Horizontal)

𝑉𝑢
Factored shear stress, 𝑇𝑣 = 𝑡 = 0.798 N/mm2
𝑤 𝑑𝑤

Where, 0.25 √𝑓𝑐𝑘 = 0.25 √30 = 1.37

As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.7)

If Tv > 0.25 √fck or tw > 200 mm

Then steel will be provided in two curtain/ layer.

(a) Selection of diameter of bars as per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.1.8)
𝑡
𝑤
Diameter of bars > 10 = 300/10 = 30mm,

(b)The maximum spacing of vertical or horizontal reinforcements shall not exceed smaller of,
1 3600
1. 5 𝐿𝑤 = = 720 mm
5

2. 3 x tw = 3 x 300= 900 mm

3. 450 mm
Hence maximum spacing = 450 mm.

Tc max = 0.63 √fck = 0.63 √30 = 3.45 N/mm2

ρh min = 0.0025 + 0.5 ( 𝐿 𝑤 − 2) (𝜌𝑣 𝑤𝑒𝑏 − 0.0025)
𝑤

ρh min = 0.0025
Dia. of bar for horizontal reinforcements, taking as T8 mm

Ah = 0.0025 x300 x 1000 = 750 mm2 / m-run (In two layers)

𝐴𝜃 𝑥 1000
Spacing, 𝑆𝑣 = =134 mm
𝐴𝑣

Providing 2legged,8mm dia bars @ 130 mm c/c horizontal reinforcement.

19
3. Design of Longitudinal Reinforcement (Vertical)
𝑡
(ρv net)min = 0.0025 + 0.01375 ( 𝐿𝑤 ) =0.0025=0.01375(300/3600) = 0.0094 or 94 %
𝑤

Now, Tc = 0.65 N/mm2 (As per IS: 456-2000, Table:19)

Tv (0.79MPa) < Tc max (3.45 MPa) ……No need to revise design

Tv (0.79MPa) > Tc (0.65 MPa)………Need to design for shear

Shear force taken by the shear steel, Vus = (Tv – Tc) tw dw = (0.79-0.65)x300x2880 =120.96 KN

𝑆𝑣 𝑦 𝑤)

𝐴ℎ 2 x 50.26

𝑆𝑣 150

Hence provided horizontal reinforcement is safe to resist shear.

ρv net = 0.94 %
Av = 0.0094x 300 x 1000 = 2820 mm2 (In two layers)

Dia. of bar for vertical reinforcements, taking as T12 mm

𝐴𝜃 𝑥 1000

𝐴𝑣

Providing 12mm dia bars @ 14 mm c/c vertical bars, contained within horizontal bars.

4. Check for the necessity of boundary element

fmax = 11.12MPa
fmin = – 1.52MPa

As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.4.1)

flim = 0.2 fck = 0.2 x 30 = 6 MPa

fmax ( 11.12MPa) > flim (6MPa)

Now, it is needed to design boundary elements

20
3.1 Check for flexural strength
Providing boundary element of size 350x 450 mm

Provided area of vertical reinforcements,

Av = (2021.1x2)x 1000/300 =1340 mm2/m

Total vertical steel, Av = 1340 x2.7 = 2618 mm2

Now, = (0.035 + 0.16)/(2𝑥0.035 + 0.36)=0.459
𝐿𝑤

𝑋𝑢 ∗ 0.0035

𝑋 𝑋𝑢 ∗
Since, 𝐿 𝑢 <

Hence,

𝑀𝑢 𝜆 1 𝑋𝑢 𝑋𝑢 2 𝛽2
= 𝜙[(1 + ) ( − 0.416 ) − ( ) 𝑥 0.168 𝑥 )]
𝑓𝑐𝑘 𝑡𝑤 𝐿2𝑤 𝜙 2 𝐿𝑤 𝐿𝑤 3

On solving above equation, Mu = 6511.65 kN-m

Hence, Mu = 6511.65 kNm > Mu = 4812 kNm (Actual moment acting on shear wall)
3.2 Loads in Boundary Elements
No extra moment, hence take only Pu = 5263 kN
Fraction of B.E Area= (300 x 450)/ (300x3600 ) = 0.125
Compression or tensile load on B.E by fraction of B.E area = 0.125x 5263 = 658 kN

21
4. Design of Boundary Element (Longitudinal Reinforcements)
As per IS: 13920 – 2016 (Cl – 10.4.2) provide short column (0.8 % Steel)
0.8
Ast =100 𝑥100𝑥300𝑥450 = 1080 mm2

Pu = 0.4 fck Ac + 0.67 fy Ast =(0.4x30x(300x450-1080))+(0.67x500x1080)

= 1988.85 kN > 658 kN HenceOK

Largest Bar Diameter = t w/10 = 300/10 = 30mm

Provide 6 bars of 16 mm dia. (Asc = 6x201 = 1206 mm2)

4.1 Design of Boundary Element (Confinement or lateral reinforcements)

Area of Link Bar, Using 8 mm dia. Link bar,
𝑓𝑐𝑘 𝐴𝑠ℎ 𝑓𝑦
𝑆𝑣 = 0.05𝑥ℎ𝑥𝑓 = (2𝑥50)𝑥500/
𝐴𝑠ℎ = 0.05 𝑆𝑣 ℎ
𝑓𝑦 𝑐𝑘
(0.05𝑥185𝑥30) = 180.2 mm
Therefore,
Maximum spacing = Least of
𝐴𝑠ℎ 𝑓𝑦 1
𝑆𝑣 = i)3 x Minimum dimension of B. E =
0.05𝑥ℎ𝑥𝑓𝑐𝑘
100mm
Where h = Larger dimension of link
ii) 6 x ф of smallest longitudinal bars =
measured from outer face.
6 x 16= 96 mm
hc = (450-2x40)/2 = 185 mm iii) 100 mm
bc = 215 mm Providing special confining reinforcement
Therefore, h = 400 mm in B.E as T8 @ 100mm c/c throughout.
