OBJECTIVES AND BASICS OF STRUCTURAL PLANNING AND DESIGN

The objective of structural design is to plan a structure, which meets the basic
requirements of structural design. The objectives are as follows:

Serviceability

Safety

Durability

Economy

Aesthetic value

Feasibility, practicability and acceptability

Once the building Architectural drawings formed and structural
arrangement has to be done and then the design problem consists of the
following:

Idealization of the structure into load bearing frames and elements for
analysis and design

Estimation of loads.

Analysis to determine the maximum moments, thrusts and shears for

design.

Design of sections and reinforcement arrangements for slabs, beams and

columns and walls using the results from analysis.

Production of arrangement and detail drawings and bar schedules.

EARTHQUAKE LOAD

Earth quake loads are calculated as per seismic co-efficient method as

suggested in IS 1893-(Part 1) - 2002.
Bangalore comes in Zone II which is of Low Seismic Risk.
The design horizontal seismic co-efficient for a structure is determined As
per CL. 7.8.2 & 7.6

Ah = ZI Sa
2R g

Importance factor,I = 1 (table 6 )

Response reduction factor,R= 3 (table 7 )
Seismic zone II Z = 0.10 (Table 2)
Ta = 0.075 (h)0.75 = 0.075 (6.9)^0.75 = 0.319 s

ANALYSIS METHOD

Analysis of staircase in STAAD.Pro
STRUCTURAL DESIGN OUTPUT
Longitudinal Reinforcement at 1st floor level from Etabs
DESIGN OF SLAB (Interior panel)

DATA:
Slab thickness 150 mm
slab level First floor
Characteristic compressive strength 25 N/mm2
Yield strength of steel 500 N/mm2
Length along X- direction 3.6m
Length along Y- direction 5m
Load calculation:
Self weight of slab = 0.15x25 = 3.75 KN/m2
Live load = 2KN/m2
Finish load (SDL) = 1.5KN/m2
Total load (w) = 6.75 KN/m2
Factored load(Wu) = 10.125 KN/m2

Calculation of Ast along shorter direction

At continuous edges: Provide 8mm dia bars at 280mm c/c
At mid span: Provide 8mm dia bars at 280mm c/c

Calculation of Ast along longer direction:

At continuous edges: Provide 8mm dia bars at 250mm c/c
At mid span:Provide 8mm dia bars at 250mm c/c

Slab detailing at top

DESIGN OF BEAM (SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM )

Beam size 200 mm x 400 mm
Beam location First floor
Beam label FB13A
Characteristic compressive strength 25 N/mm2
Yield strength of steel 500 N/mm2
Effective depth, d =400-25-16/2=367mm
Check for Mulim :
Mulim = 0.133 * fck * b *
= 0.133 * 25 * 200*
= 89.56KN-m
Mu at center =41 KN-m
Here, Mulim Mu
Hence it is a singly reinforced section.
Reinforcement Calculation
Mu / bd2 = 36*1 / 200* = 1.33
From SP-16 table no 3 , Pt = 0.33 %
Therefore Ast = 0.33*b*d / 100
= 0.33*200*367 / 100 = 243 m
But, Astmin = (0.85*b*d) / fy
= (0.85*200*367) / 500 = 124mm2 < 243m OK
Provide 2 No's 16 dia.
Ats provided =402m
Provide 2 #12 in compression zone(Nominal)
Check for shear:
Vu = 37.81 KN
v = Vu / (b*d) = 37.8*1 / (200*367) = 0.51N/m.
Pt = Ast / (b*d) *100 = 402 / (200*367) *100 = 0.54%
c = 0.5N/m
Here, c max v c
therefore shear reinforcement required
Provide 2 LVS of 8 dia @ 200 c/c.(area=500m
COLUMN DESIGN (BIAXIAL BENDING)

DATA:
Column size 200 mm x 450 mm
Column label C13 (1st floor)
Characteristic compressive strength 25 N/mm2
Yield strength of steel 500 N/mm2
Axial load 269.63 KN
Myy (M2) 17.4 KN. m
Mxx (M3) 19.6 KN. M

The reinforcement in the section is designed for axial compression and equivalent moment given by
Mu = 1.15= 30.14kNm
d' / D = 50 / 450 = 0.10
Pu / fck*bd = (269.3*1000) / (25*200*450) = 0.12
Mu/fckbD2 = 0.03 from SP16 Pt=0.5%
Therefore, Minimum steel of 0.8%
Pt = 0.8%
Hence ast= 720 mm2

Hence provide 8bars of 12mm dia(Ast provided 904mm2)

Now, Pt provided = 1%
Lateral ties.
Adopt 8 mm diameter lateral ties.
Pitch of the lateral ties shall be the least of the following
1. Least lateral dimension = 200mm
2. 16 times the diameter of the smallest longitudinal bar to which it is tied = 16 x 12 =
192mm
3. 300 mm
Hence, adopt 8 dia bars at 190 mm c/c as lateral ties
PROOF CHECKING (Pier check, Foundation size check, Beam reinforcement check) of
PRESTIGE WOODLANDS PARK project

The project was initially designed by Anagha consultants Bangalore & for Proof checking it was been sent to
Nagesh consultants,Bangalore.
The object of the work was to check the,
Location of the structural elements in the model as per the Structural layout
Sizes of the structural elements in the model as per the specifications given in Structural layout
Reinforcement provided(for Piers & Beams) by the consultants as given in the reinforcement details &
Reinforcement required from the model and commenting on the same.
This all process of Reviewing was done by overlapping the Etabs model defined sections, model design results
onto the AutoCAD drawings and then further commenting.
Commenting on structural layout
Overlapping longitudinal reinforcement of beams
Foundation layout
SITE VISIT:
Site visit was done so as to know whether the construction is going on as per the structural details given
by us like, Placing & orientation of columns, beams. & to know whether the reinforcement in structural
elements is followed as per the details given by us.
CONCLUSIONS:
Thorough study of the relevant drawings to understand the nature of the
project

Careful selection of the structural system and sizing of various members as per
architectural requirements and at the same time without sacrificing structural
requirements

Complete analysis is carried out using ETABS, STAAD.Pro & Spread Sheets
for various relevant Indian standards and their comparison with manual
calculations.

Tabulations and examination of the results of analysis and resizing of members

wherever necessary.

Checking the structure for stability requirements and members for the
serviceability requirements
