SELF-CONCEPT – 2 broad concepts

 SELF- CONCEPT-refers to your awareness of yourself. Construct and negotiates two selves.
Identification of the ideal self as separate from others.
 IDEAL SELF- self that you aspire to be. It is the one that you hope and want to be.
idealized image that we developed over time. (admire)
 ACTUAL SELF- it is the one that you actually see. Characteristics that you nurtured.
Built in self-knowledge (self- image)
 SELF-KNOWLEDGE- derived from interactions that provide insight into how others react to you.
Negotiation – exist between two selves.
Social roles – adjusted and re adjusted.
Incongruence or lack of alignment will result mental distress or anxiety.

PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS-Means making use of all personal resources – talents, skills, energy and
time. Depends on our initiates characteristics.
 SELF AWARE- making the most of your strengths, learning new skills.
 EXPERIENCE- includes knowledge and skills that we acquire in the process of cognitive and
practical activities.
 KNOWLEDGE- required for setting goals.
 SKILLS- also determine whether real actions are performed.
1. DETERMINATION- allows you to focus in achieving a specific goal without being
distracted.
2. SELF-CONFIDENCE- is manifested in speech, appearance, dressing.
3. PERSISTENCE- keep moving forward regardless of all obstacles.
4. MANAGING STRESS- helps combat stress that arises in daily life.
5. PROBLEM- SOLVING SKILLS- help cope with the problems encounter.
6. CREATIVITY- allows you to find extraordinary ways.
7. GENERATING IDEAS- helps you achieve goals using new, original, unconventional ideas.
Idea – mental image of an object formed by the human mind.

THREE KINDS OF PEOPLE


1. MOVIEGOER- watches the movie of their lives.
Feels absolutely no control of their lives.
Most pathetic, miserable people in the world.
2. ACTOR- realizes she’s the actor.
can control a big part of her life.
3. SCIRPTWRITER- creates the entire movie from her mind.
Has enormous control of her life.

2. Infancy – ( birth to 2 years) behavior are organized and ontogenetic maturation skills are developed.
3. Early childhood – ( 2 to 6 years) initial socialization is experienced.
4. Late childhood (6 to 12 years) creativity age.
5. Adolescence- ( puberty to 18 years) transition age from childhood to adulthood.
6. Early adulthood- ( 18 to 40 years) age of adjustment to new patterns of life.
7. Middle age- ( 40 years to retirement) transition age when adjustment to initial physical and mental
decline are experienced.
8. Old age- ( retirement to death) retirement age increasingly rapid physical and mental decline.

The power to act – brain has three major parts the cerebrum, cerebellum, and the brain stem.
brain stem- connects the spinal cord and the brain.

*Neurons- the basic functional units of the nervous system.
Three-part units are the key to brain function, nerve cell body, axon, and dendrite are the rapid fire
process that turns thought into movement.
*Thought- moves as an electrical signal from nerve cell down to axon to a dendrite ( looks like branches at
the end of nerve cells.
Cerebrum- is the largest of the three brain sections. 85% of brains weight and has 4 lobes.
*Frontal lobe- determines personality and emotion.
*Parietal lobe- help people understand what they see and feel.
*Occipital lobe- vision function
*Temporal lobe – hearing and words recognition abilities.

IQ – talking about intellect and how smart someone is. Measure of our abilities and though.
 IQ means intellectual quotient

EMOTIONAL INTELLEGENCE- is the ability to understand, use , and manage our emotions.
 Sometimes called EQ or EI for short.
 Can predict success in social and emotional situations.
 More important than IQ
