III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Students Activity

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings and Setting of Class Policy
Good morning, class!
“Good morning teacher!”
Are you ready to explore and learn new
concept in mathematics today?
‘Yes, teacher!”
Okay. But before that let me present to
you first our class rules.
1. Everyone deserves respect, both
students and teachers.
2. Always listen to the teacher, or
whoever is speaking.
3. Raise your hand to talk.

Are we clear, class?

Yes, teacher!
Very good.

2. Checking of Attendance
Say “Present if your name is called”

Very good! no one is absent. (Everyone saying present)

3. Collecting of Assignment
Do you have an assignment?
Yes, teacher!

Okay, pass your assignment to the front.

B. Review
Before we proceed to our lesson today, let
have first a review.

What was the topic yesterday?

"The topic yesterday is all about, The
product of the form (x+y)(x^2-
+xy+y^2)"
Thank You!

Who can give at least two rules.

C. Motivation

Before we go on to the proper discussion,

let us Energize first.
(The students start counting)
"Translate Me!"

The class will be divided into two groups.

Each group must choose a member to
answer what is ask in every problem, If his
or her answer is wrong the other group can
steal. The group that got 3 points or got the
highest score will be a winner.

D. Presentation of the Lesson

Class, what do you think our lesson today?
(The student raise their hand)
"I think, our topic today is all about
Mathematical expression and
equation"
Yes, our lesson today is all about the
Mathematical expressions and equations.

Let me first present the learning objectives.

After the discussion, you are expected to:

1.Define Mathematical expressions and

Equation.
2.Distinguish mathematical expressions for
mathematical equation by giving examples.
3.Translate verbal expression and sentences
to mathematical expressions and equation.

E. Lesson Proper
1. Activity

Okay now, I will form you into 2 groups. This

side will be the group 1, and this side will be
the group 2.
Match Me Up! (Students will count)

activity)
It you are done, paste your output on the
board. Yes Teacher!

2. Analysis

"The difference between expression

Very good! and equation, is that the expression
has no equal sign while the equation
has an equal sign.

3. Abstraction
Let us now define the definition of
EXPRESSION. Okay learner 1, kindly read!

" An expression is a combination of

numbers and variables combined by
Thank you, learner 1. mathematical operations or symbol "

Again "EXPRESSION" is a combination of

numbers and variables combined by
mathematical operations or symbols.
Therefore it's a mathematical phrase. We all
know that a phrase is not complete in ideas
and only a combination of words or in here,
numbers and variables.

Next one, kindly read learner 2.

"An EXPRESSION has no equal sign.

There is no definite answer and cannot
end up displaying the value of variables
Thank you learner 7. Let us repeat, an involved.
EXPRESSION has no equal sign. There is no
definite answer and cannot end up
displaying the value of variables involved.
Simply, in expression we will not see an
equal sign, remember that okay?

Very good! Now let us have the examples of Yes, Teacher!

EXPRESSION. Everyone please read aloud.

EXAMPLES OF EXPRESSION:
1. 8+7
2. 20÷5×12
3. 10+3×4
4. 2bx9
Thank you, everyone. 5. 8y-5
What have you observed to the examples,
learner 3?

Nice observation learner 3. If there's no "There's no equal sign ma'am."

equal sign then that is an EXPRESSION.
Remember that class.

Very good! Because we are going to tackle Yes, Teacher!

the parts of EXPRESSION.

PARTS OF EXPRESSION:
1.VARIABLE - is any letter or symbols that
represent the letter.

2.COEFFICIENT - is a constant value used

with a variable.

3.CONSTANT - is a fixed value that does not

change.

4.TERM- is a number or variable. A product

or quotient of a number and variables
separated by plus or minus sign.
Again, we have parts of expressions which
are the variables, coefficient, constant and
term. In addition we also have an operation
used in expression such as addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division
which separate the terms.

Let's have this one.

3x+5y-9
Who can tell me what part of expression is 3
and 5.

Yes, Learner 5. Can you explain too please.

"3 and 5 are coefficients ma'am

Very good, learner 5. because they are constant values used
with a variable"
3 and 5 are coefficients. Just remember that
the coefficients are simply those numbers
which are with letters. Okay?

Learner 20, what part of expression are x

and y on the given? Yes, Teacher!

" X and y are variables ma'am because

Great, learner 20. The letters in expression they are letters that represent a value."
are what we called variables that's why x
and y from the given on the board are both
variables.

Next, what is 9 from the given, learner 23.

"The 9 from the given is the constant.

It is because it's a fixed value that does
Good, learner 23. The 9 from the given is the not change".
constant because it is fixed, does not change
and simply for everyone not be confused
with the coefficients and constant, the
coefficients are the numbers with letters or
variables meanwhile the constant is just a
number.

Another Example:
9x+8
9 is the coefficient because it is together
with the variable which is x. Then 8 is the
constant because it is a fixed value and is
not with any variables. Am I Clear?

Very good, class! Yes, Teacher!

Learner 10, can you tell me which is/are the

term/s from the given expression?

"The terms from the expression are 3x,

5y and 9 because the term is any
Very well said, it seems like you are not numbers or letters which are separated
confused with the terminologies and parts by an operation"
of expressions as you can clearly identify in
which part is the letter or number in an
expression, right?

Because of that, give yourself 5 claps. Yes, Teacher!

"1,2,3,4,5 claps "

Now, let's have the definition of equation.
Kindly read learner 11.

"An equation is a mathematical

sentence formed by placing an equal
Thank You, learner 11. sign (=) between two expressions".
I'll repeat, an equation is a mathematical
sentence formed by placing an equal sign (=)
between two expressions. Therefore, when
we noticed an equal sign then that is an
equation. And as we say, it is a
mathematical sentence because a sentence
in English has complete ideas or thoughts.
Then equation has complete ideas. How? It is
because of the equal sign that portrays the
result or answer.
Is that clear?

Yes, Teacher!
Okay now, everyone can you please read
aloud the examples of equations.

EXAMPLES OF EQUATION:

1.2n-6=4
2.3y=15
3.45+5=50
4.2+(2×5)=12
Thank you, dass. 5.10+7-2(3)=11

Now, just like on the expression, can you

give me an example of equation? One by
one from the right side.

"Students will give an example of

Good job, everyone. You definitely know the equation".
difference between expression and
equation. Because of that you will not be
confused with the two once you
encountered them again, am I right?

Very good! Give yourself Good Job clap! Yes, Teacher!

"The students will do the good job

Is it clear class ? clap".

Yes, Teacher!
Next we are going to proceed in translating
verbal phrases into mathematical
expressions, and mathematical equation.
Also it is important to know the words that
are use to indicate mathematical operations.
Some of these words are shown in the chart
that follows.

ADDITION SUBTRACTION
(+) (-)
 plus  minus
 more than  less than
 increased  less
by  deminished
 the sum of by
 the total of  decreased
 added to by
 the

 the product of

Example 1.1. Translate the verbal phrases

into mathematical expression and equation.

1. The sum of X and y

Answer: x + y

Is this an expression or equation ?

Very Good!
"It is an expression, ma'am"
2. Six more than a
Answer: a + 6

3. The sum of q and four times t is equal to

29.
Answer: q + 4t = 29

Is this an expression or equation?

Very good!
"It is an equation"
4. A number increased by four is twelve.
Answer: x+4=12

It is clear, class ?

If it is really clear. What do you have

learned, learner 10. Yes, Teacher!
Okay, learner 10 said that there's a "I have learned the differences
difference between expression and between expression and equation"
equation.

How do they differ, learner 11?

"Expression is a combination of
numbers and variables combined by
mathematical operations or symbols.
While equation is a mathematical
Nice job! It seems like you are not confused sentence formed by placing an equal
between equations and expressions, am I sign (=) between two expressions"
right?

Because of that. Give yourself 5 claps

Yes, Teacher!

(1,2,3,4,5, claps)
4. Application : Board work!

Translate the following phrases into

mathematical expressions or equations, and
define if it is expression or equation.

1. Six less than twice a number is forty five. Yes, Teacher!

2. Four times the sum of twelve and y
3. The difference between six and a number (Students will raise their hand and the
divided by nine teacher will call names of students who
will answer on the board).
Who will answer on the board. So just raise
your hand silently for me to call you, okay ? 1. 2x -6 = 45 EQUATION
2. 4(12+y) EXPRESSION
3. (6 –x)÷9 EXPRESSION

Very good, it seems that you deeply

understand our topic topic today.
IV. Evaluation

Answer the following:

A. Complete the table. Answer what is ask in every item.

Verbal Phrase/Sentence Mathematical Expression or

Expression/Equation Equation
1. The sum of a number and 16 is equal to ? ?
45.
2. ? 2x+-3=9 ?
3. Seven times the difference of a number ? ?
and 5.
4. Six times the quantity two decreased by x. ? ?
5. ? 9x+8 ?

V. ASSIGNMENT
Give 5 examples for EXPRESSION and also 5 examples for EQUATIONS, then translate into
verbal phrase and sentences.
