III. Procedure

A. Learning Activities

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“Good Morning Class...” Good Morning Sir!”

“Let us pray first...” (One Student will lead the Prayer)

(Checking of Attendance) (Students raise their hand and say

...say present... present as the teacher calls in there

name)

“So how was your weekend?” “It was great sir!”

“That’s good! Have you enjoyed your “Of course, sir! It was a lot of fun and
trouble”
weekend bonding with your family?”

“That’s good to know”

“Are you ready?”

“Yes”
a. Motivation

“Before you sit down, kindly arrange your

chairs and look at your surroundings. Check
if there's a trash
around you and put in the trashcan.”

“Is it now clean class?”

“Since everyone is ready to for our new

lesson, first I would like to ask learner 1 and
learner 2 to come in front.”

“Now, one by one tell me what is the

difference between leaners 1 and 2's
appearance.”

“Very good class!”

“Everything you have said are right.

Learners 1 and 2 have their own unique
characteristics. That is also their identity.”

“Actually, every one of us here have our

own uniqueness, am I right?”

“That's great. It is the same also with some

aspects or parts of our subject,
mathematics.”

“How teacher? Okay, try to look at the

images and data presented on the board.”

Now, observed the data or the images

presented. Try to compare EXAMPLE 1
FROM EXAMPLE 2.

Ex. 1:

1. 6-r
2. 7(5+n)
3. 6f/11
4. 23+b
5. c-5

Ex. 2: (Students listen Attentively)

1. 3+n=5
2. 5-a=1
3. 6n=36
4. 7e/2=12
5. 10b=100

“What have you noticed from the given

examples? May I know, learner 10?”

“Very good! Learner 10! On the example 1

we can see that there's no equal sign while in
example 2 it has an equal sign.”

Is there any other observation?

. (JUMBLED LETTERS)

“Okay now, I will form you into 2 groups.

And you will be assigned to fix the jumbled
letters. This side will be the group 1, and
this side will be the group 2.”

“Group 1 this your jumbled letters and

group 2 this is yours.”

“I will give you 2 minutes to finish the task.

If you are done then clap your hands twice
and be quiet while waiting for the other
group to finish their task. Is that clear?”

“Is everyone done?”

“Then can we start from group 1? What

have you got group 1? What's the word?”

“Nice group 1. How about the group 2?

What have you got?”

“Very good group 2!”

“Now, you are going to paste those words

you got below the data or images we have
on the board which you think they belong or
they depict those words.”

“Okay let's check your answer. Do you think

you placed the words accordingly?

“Because of that, who among you here know

what is our lesson for today.”

“Very good!”

b. Lesson Proper

Our topic for today is about

"Differentiating expression from
equation"

“Are you ready for our new topic?”

That's great class!

“Now, let's know first the definition of

"EXPRESSION".”

Kindly read, learner 5?

“Thank you, learner 5. Again

"EXPRESSION " is a combination of
numbers and variables combined by
mathematical operations or symbols.”

“Therefore, it's a mathematical phrase. We

all know that a phrase is not complete in
ideas and only a combination of words or in
here, numbers and variables.”

“Next one, kindly read learner 7.”

“Thank you, learner 7. Let us repeat, an

EXPRESSION has no equal sign. There is

no definite answer and cannot end up
displaying the value of variables involved.
Simply, in expression we will not see an
equal sign, remember that okay?”

Very good!

Now let us have the examples of

EXPRESSION. Everyone please read aloud.

EXAMPLES OF EXPRESSION:

1. 8+7
2. 20÷5×12

3. 10+3×4

4. 2b×9

5. 8y-5

6. 2n-6

“Thank you everyone. What have you

observed to the examples, learner 4?”

“Nice observation learner 4. If there's no

equal sign then that is an EXPRESSION.
Remember that class.”

“One by one, can you give me an example

of expression?”

Very good!

An EXPRESSION is consists of letters,

numbers, and symbols. Did you notice that?

Very good!

Because we are going to tackle the parts of

EXPRESSION.

PARTS OF EXPRESSION:

1. VARIABLE - is any letter or symbols that

represent the letter.

2. COEFFICIENT - is a constant value used

with a variable.

3. CONSTANT - is a fixed value that does

not change.

4. TERM- is a number or variable. A

product or quotient of a number and
variables separated by plus or minus sign.

“Again, we have parts of

expressions which are the variables,

coefficient, constant and term.”

“In addition, we also have an operation used

in expression such as addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division which separate
the terms.”

Let’s have this;

3x+5y-9
“Who can tell me what part of expression is
3 and 5. Yes, Learner 8.can you explain too
please.

“Very good, learner 8. 3 and 5 are

coefficients. Just remember that the
coefficients are simply those numbers
which are with letters. Okay?”

“Learner 20, what part of expression are x

and y on the given?”

“Great, learner 20. The letters in expression

are what we called variables that's why x
and y from the given on the board are both
variables”

Next, what is 9 from the given, learner 23.

“Good, learner 23. The 9 from the given is

the constant because it is fixed, does not
change and simply for everyone not be
confused with the coefficients and constant,
the coefficients are the numbers with letters
or variables meanwhile the constant is just a
number.”

For example:

9x+8
9 is the coefficient because it is together
with the variable which is x. Then 3 is the
constant because it is a fixed value and is
not with any variables. Am I Clear?

Very good, class learner 10, can you tell me

which is/are the term/s from the given
expression?

“Very well said, it seems like you are not

confused with the terminologies and parts of
expressions as you can clearly identify in
which part is the letter or number in an
expression, right?”

Now, let's have the definition of equation.

“An EQUATION is a mathematical

sentence formed by placing an equal sign
(=) between two expressions.”

“Therefore, when we noticed an equal sign

then that is an equation. And as we say, it is
a mathematical sentence because a sentence
in English has complete ideas or thoughts.
Then equation has complete ideas. How? It
is because of the equal sign that portrays the
result or answer. Is that clear?”

“Okay now, everyone can you please read

aloud the examples of equations.”

EXAMPLES OF EQUATION:

1. 2n-6=4

2. 3y=15

3. 45+5=50

4. 2+(2×5) =12

5. 10+7-2(3) =11

“Now, just like on the expression, can you

give me an example of equation? One by
one from the right side.

“Good job, everyone. You definitely know

the difference between expression and
equation. Because of that you will not be
confused with the two once you encountered
them again, am I right?”

“Very good!”

c. Application

“To know if you will not be confused with

equations and expressions, get a one whole
sheet of paper and let's have an activity for 3
minutes.”
DIRECTION: in your paper, determine
which of the following are expressions and
which are equations by writing it in the
proper column.

EXPRESSION EQUATION

GIVEN:

(15-10) + 13

4×10=40

3x-2x

12y=108

10-9

120-10×5=n

5n+8=43

15×6=n

53-24

75+(280-23)

d. Generalization

“What do you have learned, learner 10.

“Okay, learner 10 said that there's a

difference between expression and equation.
How do they differ, learner 11?”

“Nice job! It seems like you are not

confused between equations and
expressions, am I right?”

IV. Evaluation
A. Direction: Determine whether each one is an expression or an equation. Write
your answer on each respective container.

(4×10) ÷ 5 7+(6×3) = 25 30 + 92 293 ÷ 0.5 - 281

150-85=65 (3×25)-5 (44 + 4) +1

91÷13=4+3 80-(20+5) (2x50) – 22 = 78

Expression Equation

II. Define Expression and

Equation.

B. Identification:
1. a constant value used with a variable.
2. a number or variable. A product or quotient of a number and variables
separated by plus or minus sign.
3. any letter or symbols that represent the letter.
4. a fixed value that does not change.

5-7. (Give three examples of EXPRESSION)

8-10. (Give three examples of EQUATION)

C. Direction: Identify the expressions and equations by putting a tick in the

respective column.
D. Identify the parts of the algebraic expressions. For 8-9, create an algebraic
expression based on its variables, coefficients, constants, and number of terms.

E. Group Activity: How do you differentiate expression from equation?

_________1. consist of letters, numbers or a combination of letters and numbers
joined by operation symbols and does not have an _______2.sign while an
_________3.consist of letters, number or a combination of
letters and numbers joined by operation symbols with an _________ 4.sign.

EXPRESSION EQUATION

Give the differences and similarities of expression and equation by using

Venn Diagram.

V. Assignment: Give 5 examples for EXPRESSION and also 5 examples for

EQUATIONS.
