Place Value of a Digit - 2
4 In addition of two numbers, if the sum of digits at a particular place is greater than 9, then 1 gets carried over to the digit left of that place.
In the following example, the sum of digits at the unit's place is 10 (>9), thus, one gets carried over to the tens place.
2 6
+ 2 4 (6 + 4 > 9)
(2 + 2 + 1) (x)
50
5 In addition of two numbers, if the sum of digits at a particular place is less than or equal 9, then no carryover is needed.
In the following example, the sum of digits at the unit's place is 4 (<9), thus, no carryover is needed at the tens place.
2 0
+ 2 4 (0 + 4 ≤ 9)
(2 + 2) (x)
4 4
In the following example, the two cases are shown, the borrowing may or may not needed.
