MOISTURE

This document reports on a moisture test project conducted on various types of wood. The objective was to determine the moisture content of softwood, light hardwood, medium hardwood and heavy hardwood. Materials used included the wood samples and equipment such as a moisture meter, oven and weighing scale. The procedure involved measuring the initial weight of wood samples, soaking them in water, drying them in an oven for 24 hours, and measuring the final dry weight. Calculations were done to determine the moisture content of each wood type. Light hardwood had 15.13% moisture content, medium hardwood 13.54% and heavy hardwood 12.99%. The conclusion was that wood weight and properties are affected by its moisture content.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Assalamualaikum wbt. First of all I would like to show my gratitude towards my

BST110 (Material Properities) ‘s lecturer, Madam Nurazura binti Mizal Azzmi for her
guidance through out this project.

Moreover, I would like to say thank you towards my groupmates who gave a
great cooperation along the process.Thank you to you guys for providing me many
information that I lack and helping me fixing my flaws.

I would like to extend my gratitude to my classmates too for easing everything

though out this project.
OBJECTIVE

The moisture content of a piece of timber is measured as a ratio of the

weight of the water in the wood relative to its dry weight and is given as a
percentage (%MC).

One of the most important factors affecting the performance and properties of
wood is its moisture content. The amount of water present in wood can affect its
weight, strength, workability, susceptibility to biological attack and dimensional
stability in a particular end use.
MATERIALS
MATERIALS USE
To determine the moisture content for this project

SOFT WOOD
To determine the moisture content for this project

LIGHT HARDWOOD
To determine the moisture content for this project

MEDIUM HARDWOOD

To determine the moisture content for this project

HEAVY HARDWOOD
EQUIPMENT

EQUIPMENTS USE
To measure the moisture content in the timbers

MOISTURE METER

To dry the wet timbers

OVEN
To weight the timber’s weigth

WEIGHING SCALE
PROCEDURE

1) Prepare the timber by cutting them into a required length and dividing each type of
them into three section as shown as diagram 1 & 2.

Diagram 1 diagram 2

2) Weight the timbers and record the data.

3) Measure the timber’s mouisture using a moisture meter as shown as diagram 3

Diagram 3
4) Dip the timbers in the water. Make sure all the timbers surface is covered with
water.
5) Put the wet timbers in the oven and leave it for 24hours as shown as diagram 4
Diagram 4

6) After 24 hours, take out the timbers and measure the timber’s weight again and
record the data.
7) Measure the moisture for each section of the timber for each type and record the
data.
RESULT

Calculation Of Moisture Content

i) Light hardwood
Moisture content, MC = (initial weight – oven dry weight) x 100
Oven dry weight
= (62.00 –53.85 ) x 100
53.85
= 15.13%

ii) Medium Hardwood

Moisture content, MC = (Initial weight – oven dry weight) x 100
Oven dry weight
= (65.00 –57.25 ) x 100
57.25
= 13.54%

iii) Heavy Hardwood

Moisture content, MC = (Initial weight – oven dry weight) x 100
= ( 80.00 – 70.80) x 100
70.80
= 12.99%

ANALYSIS

Types of wood Dry oven test Moisture content (%) Result

Wet Dry
Weight (g) Weight (g)
Light hardwood 62.00 53.85 15.13 Success
Medium hardwood 65.00 57.25 13.54 Success
Heavy hardwood 80.00 70.80 12.99 Success
CONCLUSION

By completing the project, we noticed that we had learned that the weight of the
board will change depending on the moisture level, rising with higher moisture
content and falling with lower moisture content. We employed the Oven Dry
technique for this project. When differences in the final product's moisture level might
significantly affect how well the product performs, oven dry tests are frequently
utilised. For test pieces, this technique yields an average moisture content.

The moisture level of wood is one of the most significant elements influencing its
performance and qualities. In some end uses, the amount of water in wood can have
an impact on the material's weight, strength, use, and dimensional stability. Therefore,
doing a moisture content test is crucial to ascertain
