Property Checker User Manual

Property Checker is a BIM add-in that validates property data in 3D models using input from an Excel spreadsheet. It checks for required properties that are missing, have incorrect data types or values, and outputs any failed elements to selection sets. It can also check property values and names of certain data against defined patterns and conditions. The add-in guides users to populate the Excel file template and runs validation on selected project phases, tracking progress. Results are organized in selection sets and can be exported to a Power BI file for further analysis.

1. Introduction
Property Checker is Bexel Manager add-in designed for data
validation in BIM 3D model. This add-in checks BIM elements based
on their type and also checks the correctness name of the property
value.

It uses excel spreadsheet as input for data validation. Sample of the

excel file comes with add-in, it should be used as template and it’s
formatting should not be altered.

Property Checker outputs results in form of selection sets in Bexel

Manager. Selection sets are made only for negative results (passed
elements are not shown) and result messages are contained in the
name of the selection sets.

Property Checker will give following results:

 Required property is missing

 Required property does not have value
 Required property has an incorrect data type (e.g. text instead of
numeric)
 Required property has no correctly defined value
 Required property value is not within defined condition

Also, in addition to these checks, it is possible to check the names of

certain data based on a defined regex pattern such as:

 Family names
 Sources names
 Building names
 Building storey names

2. Installation
1) Close all instances of Bexel Manager.

2) Extract PropertyChecker.zip and run install.bat file.

3) Run Bexel Manager. In Add-ins tab you will find Property

Checker icon as shown on the image below (2.1).

3. How to use
Populate excel spreadsheet with properties for desired element types as
well as sheets related to the verification of naming convention data. All
columns in sheet Element category must be populated. Exception is
column E (Condition) and column F (Key). If one of the cells remains empty,
that property will not be included in check (again exception is column E
and column F).

If there is a defined set of values that property can have, then it is

necessary to define the key in column F. Values with this key will be read
from the sheet Pick Lists, from column E. Sheet Pick Lists must be in the
second place. If there is a defined range of values that property can have,
then it is necessary to define the condition in column E.

List project phases in sheet named Project Information. It is required to

list phases in order of their execution. Also, in this sheet (Project
Information) in column C, it is necessary to define the name of the property
that will be used to read the names of the element types from the model
(Category Name Property).

An example of a filled excel file can be found on the image 3.2.

The name of the sheet
should be the same as
the name of category that
is checked (e.g. Beams,
Air Terminals, Door, etc.).

and the name of the
property with the category
of elements must be
on the first place.
Name of this sheet can’t
be changed.

The category name of the elements in the Excel file must match the names
that are read from the properties from the model which is defined in the
“Project Information” sheet.

of the element property
that identifies the element
type or category.

The name of

Also, in sheet (Property Naming Convention) it is necessary to define

category name in column A, naming pattern in column B and property for
check in column E, row 2. The values of the property for check are checked
on the basis of the defined regex pattern.

In sheet (Project Naming Convention) it is necessary to define domain in

column A, property for check in column B and naming pattern in column C.
All names used for the domain defined in column A are checked.

After starting Property Checker following dialog will appear:

1) Open Excel file 2) Select project phase 5) Export to Power BI

3) Run check 4) Create Selection Set

3.4 Property Checker Interface

While property checker is running you can track the progress of the check.
In the column results different colored flags will be placed. There are 3
different flags:

1) Yellow flag – there are warnings for this element type. Missing property
values or wrong property types are classified as warnings

2) Red flag – there are failed results. Completely missing properties are
classified as failed.

An example of a progress of the check can be found on the image (3.4)

Resulting selection sets are organized in selection set folders for each
element type (3.5).

When using the Export to Power BI function, during the process, an Excel
file will be created with data of the statistics of correctly created and
defined properties. This Excel file will be located at the following location:
C:\ProgramData\BEXEL\PropertyCheckerAddin.\

Also, on closing the form, you can save the changes that occurred after
data import or after evaluation. If this data is saved, later, by restarting the
add-in, the last saved file will be loaded. This data is stored in the project
folder that is active, on the path:
Project File Storage\PropertyChecker\PropertyCheckerAddInData.bxc.

Also when exporting, it is necessary to define the location where the Power
BI file will be saved. After successful export to PBI press the Refresh button
to reload data, which looks like the image below (3.7).
