CAD Editing or Modifying Tools

The document discusses various modifying commands in computer-aided drafting including: 1) Commands like move, copy, rotate, and scale allow repositioning and resizing objects. Trim and extend modify open objects. Fillet and chamfer modify corners and edges. 2) Mirror creates symmetrical objects and explode separates grouped objects. Stretch lengthens or shortens selections. Arrays duplicate objects in linear, circular or rectangular patterns. 3) Offset generates parallel copies while path array distributes along a path. Join combines objects into one. Proper use of modifying tools allows efficient editing of electronic drawings.

Computer-Aided Drafting
LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students should be able to;

01 Use the modifying commands in creating electronic drawing

MODIFIERS/EDITING TOOLS
Topics

Move Fillet Offset

Copy Chamfer Path Array

Rotate Mirror Rectangular Array

Scale Explode

Trim Stretch

Extend Polar Array

Move (note: much easier to perform when Object Snap Mode is ON)

-moves a selected object(s) from one location to a new location without changing its
orientation.

Click Home > Modify > Move on the ribbon.

click the object to be moved and press enter
Select a base point or reference point
click on the point or coordinate where you want to position the object

Example: the circle is need to transfer from the end point of

the first line to the endpoint of the second line

base point will the center of the circle

Copy (note: much easier to perform when Object Snap Mode is ON)

-is used to copy objects and place them at a required location.

Click Home > Modify > Copy on the ribbon.

click the object to be copied and press enter
Select a base point or reference point
click on the point or coordinate where you want to position the copied
object
Example: need to create same circle size on the other endpoint of the
line

base point will the center of the circle

Rotate (note: much easier to perform when Object Snap Mode is ON)

- rotates an object or a group of objects about a base point.

Click Home > Modify > Rotate on the ribbon.

click the object to be copied and press enter
Select a base point or reference point
Navigate the cursor around the area until the object is temporary
position at the right direction and then click.

Example: need to re-position the line that it should be the right side

base point will the center of the circle

Scale (note: much easier to perform when Object Snap Mode is ON)

- changes the size of objects. It reduces or enlarges the size without changing the shape
of an object.

Click Home > Modify > Scale on the ribbon.

click the object to be reduce or enlarge and press enter

Select a base point or reference point

type the scale factor and press enter

Example: need to double the diameter of the

current circle

base point will the center of the circle

Scale factor is 2
Trim
- When an object intersects with another object, you can remove its unwanted portion
by using the Trim tool.

Click Home > Modify > Trim on the ribbon.

select the cutting edge (intersecting object) and the portion to be removed
and press enter

select the parts to be removed then, press enter

Example: need to removed the exceed lines and the portion of the
circle to make quarter of a circle
1 2 3
Extend
- used to extend lines, arcs and other open entities to connect to other objects.

Click Home > Modify > Extend on the ribbon.

select the object where the line to be extended and intersect as the
boundary edge and press enter
select the object to be extended

Example: need to extend the horizontal line and intersect to the

vertical line. Click extend command, then select the vertical line,
then enter then select the horizontal line and press enter
Fillet
- converts the sharp corners into round corners.

Click Home > Modify > Fillet on the ribbon.

type “r” for the radius, enter, then input the radius number and press
enter
select the object to be fillet

Example: removed the corner of the object

Chamfer
- replaces the sharp corners with an angled line.

Click Home > Modify > Chamfer on the ribbon.

type “d” for the distance, input the distance number for the first and
second line and press enter
select the two line to be chamfered
Example: need to removed the corner of the object and replace it with an angled line.
Click chamfer, type D, enter, then input 1.0 (for horizontal line), enter, then input 0.5 (for
vertical line), enter, then select first the horizontal line and then the vertical line
Mirror (note: much easier to perform when Object Snap Mode is ON)

- creates a mirror image of objects. You can create symmetrical drawings using this tool.

Click Home > Modify > Mirror on the ribbon.

click the object then enter
Select a base point or reference point
Navigate the cursor around the area until the object is temporary
position at the desired direction and then click, then select NO to retain
the object source or YES to erase the object source
Example: create another object but on opposite direction with the required
distance to each other

Click Mirror command, select the

object, then enter, select the midpoint
of the line as base point, then navigate
the cursor upward then click, then
select NO
Explode
- Explodes a group of objects into individual objects. For example, when you create a
drawing using the Polyline tool, it acts as a single object. You can explode a polyline or
rectangle or any group of objects using the Explode tool.

Click Home > Modify > Explode on the ribbon.

select the object to be explode then press enter

Example: I just need to select the upper line of the rectangle, however when it is
selected, the whole rectangle is selected, to do so, use explode command
to separate the lines or sides of rectangle
Stretch (note: much easier to perform when Object Snap Mode is ON)
- lengthens or shortens drawings or parts of drawings. Note that you cannot stretch
circles using this tool. In addition, you must select the portion of the drawing to be
stretched by dragging a window.
Click Home > Modify > Stretch on the ribbon.
select the object to be stretch then press enter
select a base point or reference point
Type “D” for distance, enter, input the Distance number then press
enter
Example: The width of the rectangle is need to change from 6 inches to 10 inches. With
this, click Stretch command, then select the rectangle, enter, click the
midpoint of the vertical side, navigate the cursor to the right, type “D”, enter,
input the additional width of 4 inches then enter.
(note: much easier to
perform when Object Snap
Polar Array Rectangular Array Mode is ON)

- creates an arrangement of objects around a point in circular or rectangular form.

Click Home > Modify > Polar Array or Rectangular on the ribbon.
select the object to be array then enter
select a base point or reference point
select a base point or reference point. You can change the settings of
Not Associative
array located on the ribbon right after selecting the base point

Note: if you want that your array objects is not in a

group when selected, deselect the Associative of
Array, then closed array Associative Array Objects

Example:
Path Array
- creates an arrangement of object along a path.
Click Home > Modify > Path Array on the ribbon.
select the object to be array then press enter
select the path of array. You can change the settings of array located on the
ribbon right after selecting the path of array

Note: if you want that your array objects is not in a group when selected,
deselect the Associative of Array, then closed array

Example:
Offset (note: much easier to perform when Object Snap Mode is ON)
-creates parallel copies of lines, polylines, circles, arcs and so on.
Click Home > Modify > Offset on the ribbon.
Input the offset distance then enter
select the object source
Navigate the cursor the direction where you want to put the offset object then click
then enter

Example:

Offset Distance (0.5)

Join
-converts line, arcs and splines object into one.
expand the Modify Panel and select join button
select the objects to be joined
then press Enter
