Letter of Motivation (August, 2011) I am interested in the PhD position at the IMPRS-CS.

I am keen to begin a career in areas of computer science which I hope, will deepen and strengthen my knowledge. My objective is to continue my research in this field and this PhD position will assist me to continue my career as a researcher in computer science. I am 28 years old Computer Science professional having: 4 years graduation as Bachelor in Computer Science with CGPA: 3.40/4.00. 4 years professional experience as a lecturer. 2 years Masters in Computer Systems from Linkoping University, Sweden.

Currently, I am doing Masters thesis and course work that will be completed in November, 2011. My educational career is marked with distinction throughout from 1st Grade to Masters (18 Years). I am going to finish my 2 years Masters degree in 1 year, which is a distinction for me. However, last six years of my educational career at graduation and post graduation level helped me to grasp strong knowledge about computer science and software engineering discipline. The curriculum covered every aspect of software from inception and customer communication to deployment and maintenance. My passion for computer science field is reflected by my achievements in educational career. My recent education on Masters level is more focused on research aspects of academia and practice. With term paper, thesis and research report writing, I learned research writing skills to convey and present ideas in an effective manner. I spent almost ten years in this field, six years of education and four years of professional experience. My bachelor education built solid foundation for my career in computer science whereas my professional experience gave me the confidence. I worked almost four years as a lecturer and IT coordinator in two academic institutes. During this period I taught following subjects; Computer Architecture, Computer Security, Information and Network Security, Computer Networks and Programming (C/C++, Java). Four years bachelor and four years experience set benchmark for my Master studies in international environment at IDA, Linkoping University. I worked in groups and did some labs and projects during the degree that have shaped me into a team player as well as a reliable individual, with good interpersonal and communication skills. I am also self-driven, open-minded and ready to explore and learn new concepts and ideas quickly as I have the required fundamentals through my course work and experience. During my Master degree I studied various courses of computer science such as Computer and Information Security, Advanced Computer Architecture and IP netowrks. I have good knowledge about computer and information security (network security, system security, trust relationships, biometrics, risk analysis). I found security field very interesting and decided to do my Masters thesis in Network Security. This work realized my potentials for the research and work in security as it is essential and important part of the computer science. In my masters thesis I am doing comparison of firewall and intrusion detection system technologies. Today both Firewall and IDS technologies have many overlapping functionalities but still there are some significant differences. What kinds of countermeasures or operations are expected from Firewall and IDS, I will analyze the existing tools, and do they provide expected functionality or not? Regarding network security if we use both Firewalls and IDS together, do they provide complete protection or not? With my comprehensive knowledge about computer science field and my enthusiasm for this area of research, I believe that I could make a contribution in this position. I will gladly provide additional information about myself at a meeting with you.
