Prior knowledge:

1. Students know how to read and write 4-digit numbers.


2. Students know the place value and the digit value in a 4-digit number.
3. Students know how to compare a set of 4-digit numbers.
4. Students are able to use 4 different digits to make a 4-digit number.

Lesson Objectives:
1. Students can make the largest and smallest 4-digit number.
2. Students can make the largest odd and even 4-digit number.
3. Students can make the smallest odd and even 4-digit number.

1. Students are able to use 4 different digits to make the largest 4-digit number.
2. Students are able to use 4 different digits to make the smallest 4-digit number.

Teacher shows number cards (2, 5, 6, 8) by using visualiser and invite one student Number

7, 9). Then, teacher instructs the students to make a 4-digit number and records it in Activity

Teacher shows number cards (1, 9, 6, 0) by using visualizer and ask the students
can they make the following numbers: 0169, 0196, 0619, 0691, 0916, 0961.
Teacher tells the students that the thousands digit cannot be zero for a 4-digit
number.

Teacher instructs the students to make a 4-digit number by number cards 3 (1, 9, 6,
0) and records it in the worksheet.

Teacher gives students around two minutes and gets the 4-digit numbers from
students.

12’ Activity: Making the largest and smallest 4-digit number

Teacher invites two students to make the largest and smallest 4-digit number in Activity
question 1. Teacher guide students to tell how they form the largest and smallest 4- worksheet 1
digit numbers in this way.
(Forming the largest 4-digit number: the order of digits is counting back from left to
right;
Forming the smallest 4-digit number: the order of digits is counting on from left to
right.)
Then, teacher instruct the students to records the result on the worksheet.

Teacher gives out the number cards and instructs students to take out the number
card 2, 5, 6 and 8 and do question 2.
Teacher gives students around five minutes to finish question 2 to 4 by using the
number cards. Then, teacher checks the answers with students.

 Is it an odd number or even number? (Even number.)
 What is the smallest 4-digit number made by these four digits? (1029)
 Is it an odd number or even number? (Odd number.)

Teacher reminds that the order of digits in the largest 4-digit number is counting
back and that in the smallest 4-digit number is counting on. (**Teacher can also
revise the odd and even number with students.)
10’ Making the largest odd 4-digit number

Teacher use the above digit (1, 2, 0, 9) as an example and introduce how to make
the largest odd 4-digit number from the largest 4-digit number.
