Sheet 1 - EE 350 - Fall 2023-2024

This document outlines 5 practice problems related to mobile communication systems generations, including calculating blocking probability, determining the number of channels needed to meet certain blocking percentages, designing frequency reuse patterns to meet interference requirements, and calculating transmitted power and receiver sensitivity values. The problems cover topics like blocking probability, channel requirements, frequency reuse pattern optimization, cell radius determination, and power/sensitivity levels. Dr. Hanan El-Gammal is the instructor for the Communication Systems course, which is discussing 0G and 1G mobile generations on this worksheet.

SEMESTER: 5th year - 9th semester ACADEMIC YEAR: Fall 2023/2024

Course Title: Communication Systems Course Code: EE 350
Coordinator: Dr. Shawki Shaaban (R.I.P)
Instructor: Dr. Hanan El-Gammal Sheet - 1
Assistant: Eng. Marwa Elhdad

Sheet (1): 0G & 1G Mobile Generations

1. In a certain cellular system, given the average calling time per call is 150 seconds, the
number of available frequency channels is 12 channels and the number of users is 190
users.
i. Find the expected blocking probability of the system.
ii. Now, and for the same number of users, evaluate the additional number of
channels required to reduce the obtained blocking probability by 40%.
iii. For the obtained value for B in part (ii), find the percentage increase in the
number of channels required to increase the number of users by 80%.

2. In a certain communication system, given the number of available channels is 20

channels, the average calling time is 150 seconds.
i. What is the maximum allowable number of users that makes the system blocking
probability B not exceeds 2%?
ii. Now, for the same value of “B=2%” how many excess channels needed to allow
increasing the number of users by 50%?
iii. For the new number of users and in order to reduce the blocking probability B by
50%, what is the number of channels that must be added to the system?

3. It is desired to have a co-channel interference (C/I) result from the first tier (in the normal
case of an omni-directional antenna) to be ≥ 20 dB and the loss exponent factor (γ) to be
4.4.
i. Find the optimum reuse pattern needed for the above requirements.
ii. For a reuse distance of 6 km, what must be the value of the radius of the cell?
iii. Now use the designed values to find the interference power associated with certain
carrier power of 5 pW.
iv. Now re-design given that the minimum receiver sensitivity (Rs) = -100 dBm.

4. (a) For a cellular mobile environment, find the optimum frequency reuse pattern (kopt) that
result in a co-channel interference (C/I) >18 dB with a loss exponent factor (γ) of 4.2
and the attenuation factor (α) of 8.

(b) Find the frequency reuse distance (D) when the radius of the cell (R) is 2 km.
(c) Use the designed values to find the desired transmitted power when the associated
interference at the mobile station is -130 dBm.

5. Certain mobile operator cellular system with the following properties:

• Frequency reuse distance is 10 km, and frequency reuse pattern is kopt × 3.
• 𝐶 ⁄𝐼 ≥ 20 𝑑𝐵 with a loss exponent factor (γ) = 4.2.
• The average total interference (I) at the edge of the cell is -186 dBm.
• The measured average channel loss from the base station transceiver (BTS) to a
mobile station at the edge of the cell is 202 dB.
• System Operating Margin (SOM) = 10 dB.
Now:
i. Find the optimum frequency reuse pattern needed to meet the above
specifications.
ii. Find the radius of the cell.
iii. Evaluate the average transmitted power per bit.
iv. What is the required receiver sensitivity of the BTS?

Best Wishes
