Nonreturn Valve
Nonreturn Valve
0130 - 21 - 0022/0 EN
This Circular supersedes:
Previous experience has shown that the use of clean fuel is not always guaranteed. Fuel
tanks are often contaminated when they are filled or the fuel filter is serviced inadequately.
See also the Technical Circulars TR 0199-99-1110 "Fuel System“ and TR 0199-99-3005
"Fuels“ as well as the operating manual.
Numerous damage analyses carried out by DEUTZ Quality Assurance on injection pumps
have revealed that the majority of these components are affected by premature wear in
their functional capacity.
The wear at the injection pump plunger and at the needle seat of the injection pump is a
result of contaminated fuel.
The modern, exhaust-optimised diesel engines with high-pressure injection systems al-
ways require clean fuel to ensure their functioning on a permanent basis.
When evaluating building machinery and vehicles as part of damage analyses, it is contin-
ually established
z that significantly contaminated fuel pre-filters and also fuel main filters are not changed
until a performance deficiency is discerned,
z that no pressure-resistant DEUTZ original main filter cartridges are used for the
DEUTZ engine series 1013 and 2012 corresponding to the specifications of Technical
Circular TR 0199-20-1139,
z that the requisite heavy-duty fuel filter system with double filter and 3µm replacement
cartridges is not used for many applications (see TR 0199-20-1136),
z that fuel pre-filters are used which cannot ensure a sufficient water separation (see TR
0199-20-1128),
z that the electrical water level display is not connected on the device side for fuel pre-
filters with high-performance water separators.
If the throttle resistances of the pre-filter/main filer are so great as a result of contamination
of the fuel that the fuel pump can no longer ensure a sufficient fuel supply, the injection
pumps suck the fuel unfiltered from the fuel tank via the fuel return line.
The engine cannot therefore reach full power; however, operation of the vehicle or building
machine is still possible to a certain extent. After a short operating time, however, the injec-
tion components are subjected to pre-damaging and the engine does not reach its full, orig-
inal power even with new filters.
This damage is clearly caused by inadequate maintenance by the machinery operator and
not by a component failure resulting during production. DEUTZ AG does not accept any li-
ability for such damages.
A non-return valve for installation in the fuel return line at the customer will be intro-
duced from August 2006 to prevent such damage.

A1 No-return valve (with arrow marking for flow direction)
The non-return valve can also be used as a service kit for retrofitting existing vehicles, build-
ing machines or systems.
The retrofitting may not be carried out detrimentally to the DEUTZ warranty.
This non-return valve is supplied as a "loose accessory" for all DEUTZ engines of Exhaust
Emission Levels TIER 2 and TIER 3 with mechanical injection system (see TPI 0130-21-
0371).
Installation instructions
The installation customer (OEM = original equipment manufacturer) is responsible for the
correct installation of the non-return valve in the fuel return line.
The non-return valve is designed for the hose internal diameters 10 and 12 mm.
A corresponding reduction is necessary if the device manufacturer uses larger hose internal
diameters for the return line.

A2 Installation of non-return valve - Example 2012
1 = Non-return valve
2 = Fuel pre-filter (for installation at the customer, corresponding to Technical Circular TR
0199-20-1128) is not shown.
The flow direction (arrow marking, see Figure A1) must always be observed when in-
stalling the non-return valve, as the valve is otherwise ineffective.
