Basic rules of chess
(According to FiDE)
• The movement of pieces is to be done with one
hand. Movement of piece with 2 hands will result
to an illegal move

• When castling, a player should first move the


king with one hand and then move the rook with
the same hand

• If a player having the move touches a piece as if


having the intention of moving it, then the player
must move it if it can be legally moved.
• A player must claim a violation of the rule
immediately before making a move, or lose the
right to claim
Pieces of chess
• There are six pieces in chess:
the king, queen, rook, bishop,
knight, and pawn.
• The game is started by the
white side.
• Queen holds the value of 9,
followed by rook with 5, knight
with 3, bishop with 3 and pawn
with 1.
• Very first move, can choose to advance 1 or 2 squares
Basic movement of • Thereafter, can only advance 1 square per turn.

pawn • Pawns can only Capture diagonally, 1 square forward,


to the left or right.
Basic movement of • Moves in an L-shaped pattern: 2 left/right, 1 forwards ... in
ANY direction.

knight • Knights can jump over stuff.


Basic movement of bishop
• Moves diagonally, on a single color
square.
• Can move to any square, in a single
direction, per turn, providing its
path is clear
• Can only capture diagonally.
Basic movement
of rook
• Rooks can only work along
the straights, but can get
from one side to another,
in a single turn, if the path
is clear.
• Needs Open Files, or clear
Ranks, to be effective
Basic movement of queen
• Queens can move to any square, in
any direction, providing its path is
clear
• Your Queen should be one of the
LAST Pieces into battle (definitely
after Pawns, Knights, Bishops.)
• Use Queens in Battery Attacks with
either Rooks or Bishops.
Basic movement of king
• Kings can only move or capture ONE
square, in ANY direction, per turn.
• The exception is in Castling, where a
King and Rook can switch places
• Castle your King as quickly as possible,
in the Opening.
How to castle
• there are two types of castling:
kingside (short castling) and
queenside (long castling)
• Move the king two spaces to the
left or right.
• Move the king on top of the rook
you want to castle with.
• The rook will jump across and to
the other side of the king
automatically.
Rules regarding castling
• The king and rook cannot have moved from their
starting squares.
• All spaces between the king and rook must be empty.
• The king cannot be in check.
• The squares that the king passes over must not be
under attack, nor the square where it lands on.
Basic structure of the
competition
1. The competition is divided into 3 rounds i.e,
quarter finals, semi-finals and finals.
2. The individual winning the quarter finals will
be ascending to semi-finals with strong rivals.
3. Once the individual wins semi-finals he/she
would be competing with a stronger opponent
in the finals.
