​TYPES OF GUIDANCE

Guidance is a process by which individuals are assisted in


making adequate adjustments to life’s situation. It lets people
know their abilities, aptitudes, interests, perceptions and
limitations.
There are several types of guidance that can be provided in
different contexts, such as Educational, Vocational, Social and
Personal Guidance.
1) Educational Guidance: This type of guidance is designed to
help students succeed academically. Educational guidance
can include assistance with course selection, study strategies,
time management, exam preparation, and career planning.
Educational guidance can also include specialized support
for students with learning disabilities, those who are
struggling academically, or those who are transitioning from
one level of education to another.
The teacher provides this type of guidance to students for
their educational problems. This type of guidance is used to
choose the subjects in school, identifying the cause of failure
faced by the student by diagnostic tests in study subjects.
2) Vocational Guidance: This type of guidance helps
individuals make informed decisions about their career or
job choices. Vocational guidance can include assistance with
identifying career goals, exploring different career paths,
developing job-search skills, creating resumes and cover
letters, and preparing for job interviews. Vocational guidance
may also involve identifying and addressing any gaps in a
person’s skillset or education that may be preventing them
from achieving their career goals.
This type of guidance is given to individuals for choosing a
job or to clarify problems in certain jobs. Different types of
tests are used in this type of guidance like Differential
aptitude tests, Intelligence tests and aptitude tests,
personality and interest inventories and Achievement and
scholastic aptitude tests.
3) Social Guidance: This type of guidance focuses on
developing healthy social relationships. Social guidance can
include assistance with developing communication skills,
building healthy interpersonal relationships, developing
empathy and emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution.
Social guidance may be particularly important for
individuals who are struggling with anxiety, depression, or
other mental health issues that may be impacting their
ability to connect with others.
4) Personal Guidance: This type of guidance focuses on
helping individuals develop a better understanding of
themselves and their goals. Personal guidance can include
assistance with self-reflection, identifying personal values
and priorities, developing mindfulness, and setting goals for
personal growth. Personal guidance may also include
counseling or therapy for individuals who are struggling
with mental health issues or emotional challenges.
This type of guidance is provided for the personal problems
of the individual or other related problems. The problems
can be family and home problems, emotional adjustment and
anxiety or curiosities, financial or economic problems etc.
Overall, guidance can be an essential aspect of personal and
professional development, and seeking guidance can help
individuals achieve their goals and navigate challenges
effectively.
TYPES OF COUNSELING
Counselling is a talking therapy, it allows people to discuss
their troubles with trained professionals in a peaceful
ambience. It is generally a process where individuals talk
about their issues to overcome their problems.
1) Career Counselling: In this type of counselling, aspirants
are given career guidance and the counsellor shows the
individual the right path which will lead to a bright future in
their area of interest.
2) Mental Health Counselling: In this type of counselling
individuals who are going through emotional distress are
given support. Counsellors try and provide ways to overcome
the situation that person is facing and nurture their well-
being.
3) Relationship Counselling: It is also known as couples
therapy. People seek this type of counselling when they have
problems related to their love or marriage life. A therapist
helps couples to overcome their problems and enter into a
long-term commitment.
4) Rehabilitation Counselling: This type of Counselling helps
people with disability to fulfil their goals and lead an
independent life. The counsellors support the concerned
people to overcome psychological disabilities.
Need for Guidance and Counselling
Life presents us with various choices and challenges, ranging
from academic and career decisions to personal relationships
and mental well-being. These situations can be
overwhelming, and without proper guidance, individuals
may struggle to make informed choices. Professional
guidance counsellors offer valuable insights, helping
individuals explore their interests, talents, and strengths to
make well-informed decisions for a fulfilling life.

Guidance and counselling are not only about addressing
problems; they are also instrumental in fostering personal
growth. Counsellors work with individuals to identify areas

fields.

Key differences between Guidance and Counseling
1] Focus: Guidance primarily focuses on prevention and
overall development, while counseling centers on
remediation and problem-solving.
2] Purpose: Guidance aims to assist individuals in decision-
making and offering general advice, whereas counseling
provides specialized assistance and therapeutic support.
3] Setting: Guidance is often conducted in group settings,
while counseling is typically conducted on an individual
basis.
4] Scope: Guidance is concerned with addressing educational
and career needs, whereas counseling primarily addresses
emotional and psychological concerns.
5] Delivery: Guidance can be provided by non-specialists,
whereas counseling is typically delivered by trained
professionals.
6] Approach: Guidance helps individuals identify their
strengths and offers information, whereas counseling focuses
on helping individuals overcome specific challenges.
7] Formality: Guidance tends to be less formal and
structured, while counseling follows a more formal and
structured approach.
8] Duration: Guidance is usually provided over a shorter
period, whereas counseling may involve long-term
therapeutic relationships.
9] Training: Guidance requires basic training in providing
information and advice, while counseling necessitates
specialized training in therapeutic techniques.
10] Clientele: Guidance is often provided to a wide range of
individuals, while counseling is generally offered to
individuals facing significant emotional or psychological
difficulties.
Relationship between guidance and counseling
1. The main goal of guidance and counseling is to give an
opportunity to a person to see a variety of available options
as to assist or help the person in making wise choices.
2. Guidance and counseling both aimed at assisting students
to draw up their own plans of academic and non academic
pursuits and arrived at right decisions and find solutions to
his problems.
3. It is not specific to any stages of development of a student
in educational institutions, student’s physical and mental
health and his adjustment issues at home, school vocational
and social demands, relationships etc. guidance and
counseling emphasis on all these areas.
4. It is a continuous process extending all throughout one’s
life. There is nothing like a one shot and for one time
guidance and counseling. It is a continuous process.
 Guidance and counselling refers to the servivces that
promote personal, social, educational, and career
development.
 Guidance and counselling are twin concept and have
emerged as essential elements of every educational activity.
 Guidance and counselling are not synonymous term,
counseling is a part of guidance.
 Guidance in educational context, means to indicate, point
out, show the way, lead out and direct. Counseling is a
specialized service of guidance.
 Guidance and Counselling both are psychological processes,
goal of both would be to improve the behavior of the client.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING
GUIDANCE
1. Guidance is used for prevention or to change perspectives.
2. Guidance provides ready answers and decisions for clients.
3. Guidance is the advice or instructions on general
problems, given by someone more experienced or qualified.
4. Guidance may be given in a short period of time.
5. Guidance approach is comprehensive and extroverted.
6. Guidance is to optimize and overall development of the
students.
7. Guidance can be given to an individual as well as a group.
8. Guidance are given to the individuals but not forced.
9. In guidance, confidentiality is not guaranteed.
10. In guidance approach, the decisions are made by the
guide.
COUNSELLING
1. Counselling is more to find cure to a problem.
2. Counselling empowers individuals to create the most
appropriate solutions to tackle an issue.
3. Counselling is the professional advice specifically based on
personal and psychological issues of people given by
professional counsellor.
4. Counselling is given for a long period of time.
5. Counselling approach is in depth and introverted.
6. Counselling is for their personal and professional
development.
7. Counselling can be given only to an individual where the
counselee shares everything with the counsellor.
8. Counselling uses in depth scientific methods to help them
identify the solution to the problem.
9. In counselling, confidentiality is guaranteed since the
sessions are one to one.
10. In counselling approach, the client is free to make any
decision

Advantages of guidance
1)It assists the students to understand him.
2) It helps the student to get maximum out of the school.
3)It provides to the community with better adjusted citizens.
4) It avoids various problems which otherwise would lead to
mental illness.
5)It helps the administrators to make admissions to various
courses.
6)It helps the administrators to make best use of available
resources (e.g. money, time, energy etc.) of the staff, students,
parents and the community.
7)It helps in improving the relationships between the parent,
the school and the university.
8)It helps the parents in understanding their child in a better
way.
9)It helps the parents to get suitable and adequate
information about various courses of study and vocations.
10)It helps in improving parent teacher relationship.
11)It provides for special provision for the education of gifted
students, slow learners and handicapped students.
12) It helps the students in developing better personal social
and emotional relationships.
13)It helps the teacher to know more about strengths and
weaknesses of his students.
14) It enables the teacher to devise suitable methods so as to
meet the specific and individual needs of the students.
15) Teachers come in closer contact with the students and
can obtain useful information from them.
Disadvantages of guidance
1)Mostly these services are not properly organised.
2)Such services lack in men and materials.
3)More emphasis is being laid on psychological tests.
4)Existing conditions of life are too complex.
5)Qualified guidance personnel may do great harm.
Advantages Of counselling
1)At this stage counselling is done to know the problem in
learning process.
2)For better personnel development.
3)To prevent chronic effects of fear and anxiety that can
affect learning.
4)Forgetting or deleting bad habits.
5)Trying new approach, behaviour, attitudes, etc so that
better results can be obtained.
6)To know us better.
7)In school so many changes occurs so at different age
counselling is very important to tell them how to manage
with this.
8)To solve personal problems including relationship issues,
anxiety, anger management, etc.
Disadvantages of Counselling
1)High risk of getting too Personal.
2) Unable to Provide a Sense of Belonging.
3) Candidates are deprived of Practical Wisdom.
